$1 Million Lough Endowment to Benefit
Annual Celebrate Freedom Veterans Day Parade

Provision for an endowment gift totaling $1 million has been made to the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust from the estate of Frank and JoAnne Lough. The endowment will perpetually endow the Reserve Trust’s annual Celebrate Freedom Veterans Day Parade as well as educational programs at the Pearson Air Museum. The announcement of the endowment was made at the Celebrate Freedom Veterans Day Parade by Elson Strahan, President and CEO of Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust.

“This generous gift was established through collaboration with the Community Foundation of Southwest Washington,” said Strahan. “The Community Foundation was a great partner in enabling us to facilitate the intent of the Loughs.”

Frank Lough served in the United States Navy for more than 20 years. In keeping with the couple’s belief that younger generations should not forget the sacrifice and commitment of its veterans, more than $640,000 of their bequest will be invested as a restricted fund and dedicated to the annual production costs of the November Veterans Day Parade and festivities.

Another $170,000 of the bequest also will be invested as a perpetual account and restricted to educational programs at the Pearson Air Museum managed by the Historic Reserve Trust. When Frank Lough was a youth, his passion for flying was fueled by his father when they built airplanes together. Frank acquired his first airplane when he was still a teen, and he owned several planes throughout his lifetime. He flew into and out of Pearson Field, and he also visited Pearson Air Museum. His wife JoAnne, who shared Frank’s passion for flying, received her pilot’s license as well.

The final piece of the Lough gift will mature in about 15 years and will be worth approximately $250,000. This will become part of the Veterans Day Parade Fund and will be applied to this event.  Funds that exceed parade costs may be allocated to other Celebrate Freedom programs including Flag Day, the Marshall Public Leadership Award, the Marshall Youth Award, Independence Day at the Historic Reserve or the Marshall Lecture Series.

Business, community leaders appointed to Clark College boards

Clark College recently announced new appointments to the boards of the Clark College Foundation, Alumni Association and Penguin Athletic Club.

Dr. Larry Easter, Jason Joner, and Rick Takach will each serve a three-year term on the Foundation Board of Directors.  Easter is a professor emeritus at Clark College, where he taught psychology and computer science. Joner, an attorney with Miller Nash LLP, has taught business and corporate law in the Clark College paralegal program. Takach is president and CEO of Vesta Hospitality, a national hotel management and development firm.

"The addition of these new board members strengthens the backgrounds and experiences of our foundation board,” says Bruce Davidson, chair of the foundation board. “Rick Takach is a recognized international leader in the hospitality business. Jason Joner is a strong, local business attorney and he is a Clark College alumnus. Larry Easter's faculty experiences as an instructor at Clark are invaluable.  We are grateful to have their collective talents helping to lead our foundation."

In addition, six new members were appointed to three-year terms on the Clark College Alumni Association Board.  The new Alumni Association board members are (Ignacia) Alex Gordon, Nelson Holmberg, Maya Muller, Andrew Ness, Donna Roberge-Nozel and Rico Selga.  In addition, David Gross has been appointed to a three-year term on the board of the Penguin Athletic Club.

Established in 1973, the Clark College Foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt public charity and serves as the fundraising arm of Clark College.

“The Clark College Foundation provides a margin of excellence for Clark College and its students.  We do this by bridging the gap between the aspirations of the college and community and what is possible through state and federal funding.  We expand student access to educational programs and services and we cultivate community, business, and governmental partnerships to support the college,” said Lisa Gibert, president and CEO of the Clark College Foundation.

Gibert added, “The foundation’s goals, programs and activities support the college’s mission and vision.  “The foundation’s Board of Directors reflects the voice of the community in those important efforts.  Together, we help Clark College continually take ‘the next step’ to support student success.”
