Gary Galland passes away at 55

Former Vancouver resident Gary Galland, 55, passed away on November 16, 2008 in Palm Springs, California.

Gary was born in LaJolla, California, on July 14, 1953. He moved to Vancouver in 1980; there he focused on two of his talents: the preparation of fine food, and his ability
 to connect with people.
Gary Galland

He opened a small restaurant/bakery and developed an active catering business. His signature “fudge cake” became the talk of the town. The business thrived, and he opened a new restaurant, Tyrone’s Patisserie, which he operated in downtown Vancouver for ten years. He also had an innate ability to recognize talent in musicians. Soon the restaurant was alive with music from such artists as Michael Harrison and Dave Friesen. Gary helped present Michael Harrison at his first public concert at the Columbia Arts Center.

When he sold Tyrone’s Patisserie, Gary joined forces with Cherie Ronning in two ventures. First they opened and operated an event space downtown Vancouver called “Off Broadway.” Then as a team they open and operated Avalon, at St. James Places for a pair of local investors.

In 1999, Gary and his wife Kim, moved to Palm Springs, where he used his entrepreneurial spirit to open still another restaurant and used his creative eye to turn ordinary houses into beautiful homes.

Gary leaves behind his wife, Kim, daughter Danielle, Danielle’s mother, Linda Galland, nephew Brandon Galland ,and a multitude of friends in Washington, California and Mexico. His parents, Lee and Dessie Galland, and his brother, Lee Galland, preceded him in death.

A Celebration of Life for Gary’s will be held in Palm Springs on Saturday, November 22. Donations to honor Gary will be accepted by Gilda’s Club Desert Cities, 67-625 E Palm Canyon Dr #7A, Cathedral City, CA 92234, 760-770-5678.

Friday’s midnight showing of Twilight to benefit Battle Ground Library

Scholarships open doors for two students enrolled in SWWDC's youth program

The Young Professionals of Vancouver (YPOV) organization hosted its first annual Reach for the Stars scholarship dinner and silent auction on November 15 in Vancouver, raising more than $8,000 to fund two college scholarships for low-income students enrolled in the Youth Workforce Program (YWP), which is funded by SWWDC and administered by Educational Service District 112 (ESD 112).  Sponsors included: American Paper Converting, Bay Bank, Eric Fuller & Associates, iQ credit Union, NIES Insurance, Pacific Continental Bank, Peterson & Associates, Robertson & Olson Construction, Willamette University MBA.

The YPOV scholarships provide assistance to Clark County youth who do not otherwise have adequate resources to attend college and who have overcome significant barriers to achieve academic success.

The 2008 scholarship winners Ashley George and Brandon Nicholson were in attendance at the dinner and presented their future plans to the audience.

George and Nicholson were selected for the scholarship on the basis of their character, the steps they have taken to overcome barriers, their academic record, and their motivation. They also met YPOV's criteria that they be enrolled in the YWP and participating in the active phase of the program at the time of scholarship award, have a diploma or GED, and reside in Clark County with intention to continue their education at an accredited two-year or four-year college or university, full-time, beginning 2009.

Tina Vlachos, YPOV president said, "We are proud of our 2008 scholarship winners for their significant accomplishments.  And, we are happy to partner with SWWDC and YWP to continue to grow and develop the Vancouver workforce.  Our youth scholarships are a wonderful way to do this"
