Marshall Youth Leadership award nominations open

The Marshall Youth Leadership Award Selection Committee, on behalf of the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust, is seeking nominations for the General George C. Marshall Youth Leadership Award presented by SEH-America. Established in 2000, the award will be presented to an 11th or 12th-grade high school age Clark County student who demonstrates leadership, takes a stand for the rights of others, serves as a role model, shows initiative and motivates others to become involved. The recipient will be recognized at a March 25, 2009, award ceremony at the Marshall House.

"Each year, the young people nominated for the Marshall Youth Leadership Award are diverse in their backgrounds, experiences and accomplishments," said Tom Hagley, Jr., co-chair of the selection committee. "This award program highlights the many ways that Clark County students provide exemplary leadership and service to their schools and to their communities."

Benefits of the award include:

  • · $1,000 college scholarship

  • · $500 paid summer internship in the Historic Reserve Trust office

  • · Opportunity to meet with local elected representatives

  • · Opportunity to attend and participate in several Celebrate Freedom events including the Flag Day Ceremony and the Veterans Parade

  • · A biography of General George C. Marshall.

Nomination Criteria:

  • The candidate must live in Clark County

  • The candidate must be enrolled in high school (or home schooled) at the 11th or 12th-grade level

Selection is based on the nominee's activities and projects which demonstrate the values General Marshall represented as one of America’s leading citizens and soldiers

The 2008 Marshall Youth Leadership Award recipient, Renata Fusso, graduated from Skyview High School and is pursuing a nursing degree at the University of Portland.

Nomination forms can be picked up at the Reserve Trust's Celebrate Freedom Office (General O.O. Howard House, 750 Anderson Street, Vancouver, WA 98661), downloaded from the website at www.historicreserve.org or by calling the Trust office (360- 992-1804). The nomination submission deadline is 5 p.m. on February 13, 2009. The recipient will be announced on March 9. The public is invited to attend the award ceremony at the Marshall House on March 25, 2009 at 4 p.m.

Clark Public Utilities’ StreamTeam plants largest stream restoration project in Clark County history

Over 24,000 of the 35,000 native trees to be planted in the largest restoration project in Clark County history have gone into the ground to save salmon.  Hundreds of StreamTeam volunteers have come together to plant trees on the project over the last 3 months. Trees and shrubs help prevent erosion and provide shade to keep waters cool for salmon.

On Saturday, December 6, StreamTeam volunteers will continue to plant trees on the 40-acre project to protect local water quality and improve wildlife habitat. The day will consist of a community tree planting along the East Fork of the Lewis River from 8:45 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Volunteers are invited to participate. The project is a partnership between a variety of organizations and agencies including: Clark Public Utilities Watershed Enhancement Program, Lower Columbia Fish Enhancement Group, the StreamTeam, Stream Stewards, Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation, Clark County and the Northwest Service Academy.

Those interested in volunteering may contact Lisa Beranek at (360) 992-8585 or send email to StreamTeam@clarkpud.com. Participants must register in advance due to limited space.

Over the past 15 years Clark has planted over 630,000 trees along 12 miles of stream, installed miles of livestock exclusion fencing, removed tons of garbage, eliminated invasive non-native plants over 150 acres and installed 2 miles of in-stream projects to enhance salmon habitat.

Ecology holds hearing on "clean cars" update, vehicle label

A public hearing next week will focus on updates to the state's "clean cars" rule, including requiring a label that describes a new vehicle's emissions of climate-changing greenhouse gases.

The 2008 Legislature directed the Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) to develop an easy-to-understand label that shows new vehicles' emissions of greenhouse gases and smog. The label should be ready for use in early 2009. It must be displayed on each new passenger car, light-duty truck and medium-duty passenger vehicle (such as most vans and SUVs) sold in Washington. Those vehicles can't be sold without a label.

A public hearing on the rule update starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, in Ecology's auditorium at 300 Desmond Drive SE, Lacey.

Firefighters team with Culinary Institute to help needy families

A holiday dinner and auction is set for Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 5:30 p.m. to benefit local families. The VFD Volunteer Firefighters Association is teaming up with Northwest Culinary Institute and the International Air and Hospitality Academy for the event.

All money raised at $35 per guest will be donated to the firefighters association to support the groups' food and toy drive. Only 90 seats are available.

"For $35 you can have a festive evening and dinner with family and friends while helping over 25 families and their children in need this holiday season," says Airen Elizabeth, event coordinator for the volunteer firefighters.

The festive buffet-style dinner includes roast baron of beef, honey glazed ham, fresh salads, side dishes and desserts. Tax and gratuity are included. A wine and a micro-beer bar will be available at an additional cost.

A silent auction will also be held.

The event will be conducted at E.B. Hamilton Hall/Red Cross Building, Historic Fort Vancouver, 605 Barnes Street, Vancouver, WA 98661.

For reservations, call student Anne Pinney at 360 281-7946 or instructor John Thompson, at 360 356-4549. Cash, checks, and credit cards will be accepted.
