Clark Public Utilities’ StreamTeam plants largest stream restoration project in Clark County history Over 24,000 of the 35,000 native trees to be planted in the largest restoration project in Clark County history have gone into the ground to save salmon. Hundreds of StreamTeam volunteers have come together to plant trees on the project over the last 3 months. Trees and shrubs help prevent erosion and provide shade to keep waters cool for salmon. On Saturday, December 6, StreamTeam volunteers will continue to plant trees on the 40-acre project to protect local water quality and improve wildlife habitat. The day will consist of a community tree planting along the East Fork of the Lewis River from 8:45 a.m. until 1 p.m. Volunteers are invited to participate. The project is a partnership between a variety of organizations and agencies including: Clark Public Utilities Watershed Enhancement Program, Lower Columbia Fish Enhancement Group, the StreamTeam, Stream Stewards, Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation, Clark County and the Northwest Service Academy. Those interested in volunteering may contact Lisa Beranek at (360) 992-8585 or send email to StreamTeam@clarkpud.com. Participants must register in advance due to limited space. Over the past 15 years Clark has planted over 630,000 trees along 12 miles of stream, installed miles of livestock exclusion fencing, removed tons of garbage, eliminated invasive non-native plants over 150 acres and installed 2 miles of in-stream projects to enhance salmon habitat. Make a difference while you shop Clients and staff members of Columbia River Mental Health Services will hold their annual holiday crafts bazaar on December 13 from 1:30 to 4:00 at the main clinic lobby, 6926 NE Fourth Plain Blvd. Crafts include many handmade items such as jewelry, cards, scarves and other holiday items. Ecology holds hearing on "clean cars" update, vehicle label A public hearing next week will focus on updates to the state's "clean cars" rule, including requiring a label that describes a new vehicle's emissions of climate-changing greenhouse gases. The 2008 Legislature directed the Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) to develop an easy-to-understand label that shows new vehicles' emissions of greenhouse gases and smog. The label should be ready for use in early 2009. It must be displayed on each new passenger car, light-duty truck and medium-duty passenger vehicle (such as most vans and SUVs) sold in Washington. Those vehicles can't be sold without a label. A public hearing on the rule update starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, in Ecology's auditorium at 300 Desmond Drive SE, Lacey.
