Vancouver grows heritage tree inventory

Thanks to efforts of residents, seven new trees have been awarded Heritage Tree status.

The City of Vancouver protects and recognizes these and other noteworthy trees in the community through the Heritage Tree program. The new edition of the Heritage Tree Inventory now has over 40 historic trees, available for viewing at: www.cityofvancouver.us/urbanforestry

Trees are discovered and listed through the help of historians and documents as well as from the people who have made an effort to preserve the trees over the years.  Other trees on the list include the venerable Old Apple Tree and the majestic Officers Row grove.

But there are many more historic trees within Vancouver with stories that have not yet been told.  While it is the responsibility of the City Forester to compile a list of potential Heritage Trees, it falls upon the community to first nominate these trees for Heritage status.

"I encourage any person who knows of a tree that they believe should be honored and preserved to contact the City's Urban Forestry Program" advises Erika Johnson, Chair of the Urban Forestry Commission.
