Vancouver's own Larry Easter captured beauty amidst the rainshowers yesterday as the sun illuminated the petals of a red Amaryllis, a promise that Spring truly is just around the corner. Rainy, cloudy weather is forecast through Sunday, but it's always good to be on the lookout for sunbeams....just in case.

Camas sweeps Science Olympiad


Under of the guidance of coach Ron Wright, the Camas High School "Black" Team took first place in the regional Science Olympiad. Seventeen Teams from 11 schools competed on Sat., March 14 at the Lower Columbia Community College in Longview. Top scoring CHS students included club president and senior Stephanie Nicholson, as well as team captain and senior Gaelen LeBlanc, senior Jason Reiter, and junior Natalie Stone. The three-year-old Camas team placed third in last year's state competition and hopes to go the national event  this year in Augusta, Georgia. Qualifying for the Washington State Tournament, were CHS ( 1st Place ), Union (2nd), Columbia River (3rd),  Mountain View (4th), Prairie (5th), and Excel Academic League (6th). The day-long state tournament will be held on April 18 at Clark College.  Viewing is free and open to the public. Science Olympiad involves both academic science skills and hands-on engineering abilities in 23 different events. Students compete in tests and "build it" events that require study, practice, and teamwork.

Columbia Imaging Group Makes $50,000 Gift

The physicians who read patient's mammograms and diagnose any breast health issues have stepped forward to give a gift of $50,000 to help build the new Kearney Breast Center at Southwest Washington Medical Center.

"We're thrilled Columbia Imaging has partnered with us on this outstanding facility," said Southwest Washington Medical Center Foundation director Jean Rahn. "This further demonstrates their willingness to invest personally in the health of the women in our community."

Rock Wood Fired Pizza & Spirits, the new eatery in the new Grand Central Shopping Center just off Highway 14, is donating 50 percent of all draft beer sales between 11 a.m. and midnight, tomorrow, St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, to the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District’s 2009 summer reading program.

The summer reading program encourages students to read through the summer vacation. An estimated 44,000 reading prizes will be given young readers. The cost of the program is about $51,000.

Other sponsors of the event are Columbia Credit Union, Coors Light, The Columbian, Fish Brewing Company and Columbia Machine, Inc.

Skills Center students headed for state championships

60 students from the Clark County Skills Center will vie for state championships in the SkillsUSA statewide competition next month in Yakima after finishing in the top three in the recent southwest Washington regionals.

Among the twelve regional champions were Mountain View senior Stephen Dirocco and Union junior Valeriy Silanov in Automotive Technology; Justin Roub, a Columbia River junior, and Viktor Slivkov, a Heritage junior in Construction Technology; Evergreen senior Aaron Bruckner, Parkrose senior Sterling Arkills, Camas junior Benjamin Rodriguez and Mountain View senior Steven Nance in Electro-Digital Technologies; and seniors Zack Flatner of Hockinson and Andrea Bunica of Parkrose in Pre-Engineering and Design.

The regional champions in Criminal Justice -- Union juniors Isabella Cruz and Darya Koloyarskaya as well as Evergreen juniors Tyler Rossmiller and Timothy Tite – will not compete in Yakima because there is no statewide competition for Criminal Justice.

The statewide competition runs April 9th through April 11th at the Yakima Convention Center.

Four candidates in the running for Hockinson superintendent position

The Hockinson School District met in-person with four candidates March 13 and 14. Candidates interviewed include Sandra Yager, Donald Brannam, Mark Ross and Michael Grubbs.

Activities included a tour of Hockinson's K-12 facilities, participating in a panel discussion moderated by student-leaders, and completing interviews with staff, citizens and the Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors will hold a special meeting at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 19 to review additional background and reference information, and further develop next steps in the process of selecting a superintendent.

The Board expects to complete the selection process by mid-April.

One of the candidates, Dr. Donald Brannam, withdrew his application over the weekend.
