Share’s upcoming dinner evening Share, which cares for the homeless and hungry in the greater Vancouver area, is holding its eighth annual Share-a-Bowl fundraising dinner, complete with live entertainment, Sunday, April 26, at Skyview High School. Doors open at 3:45 for the 4 p.m. event. Dinner includes a variety of soup selections as well as salad, bread, beverages and dessert. Those performing at the dinner concert include Michael Allen Harrison, the Gunnar Roads Band, the Curtis Salgado/Alan Hagar Duo, Norman Sylvester, and Karen Therese. These “very talented local performers,” says Diane Christie, executive director of Share, “believe in and support Share’s mission,” especially regarding “the hundreds of children who face hunger on a daily basis in our community.” To buy event tickets, call Becky Parker, 887-8556, or click on the Share-a-Bowl link on Share’s website, www.sharevancouver.org. $30 for each adult ($35 after April 10) and $5 for each child ages 5-12. Children under 5 are admitted free. Tables of ten can be reserved for $275 ($300 after April 10). Proceeds will benefit Share’s Children’s Hunger Initiative, including the Backpack and Summer Lunch programs, information about which is available at Share’s website. Anyone unable to attend the dinner but wishing to make a financial contribution to Share may call 695-7658 extension 310 or send a check to Share, P.O. Box 1209, Vancouver, WA 98666. Event sponsors for 2009 are Comcast, the Columbian, the Vancouver Business Journal, Radio Disney, Les Schwab, Albina Fuel, Nutrition Now, and 89.1 KMHD. Share was founded in 1979. Evergreen schools’ Deeder John Deeder, Evergreen Public Schools superintendent, will answer questions from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, during his monthly no-host brown bag lunch meeting with interested community members in the Evergreen Room of the Tan Complex at the district’s Administrative Service Center, 13501 NE 28th Street, Vancouver. The meetings, on the second Wednesday of each month, will continue until June 10. A complete schedule of the meetings, including time and locations, is available on the district website at www.evergreenps.org. Free Sunday hiking Popularity rules. The Mount St. Helens Institute’s Sunday hiking program—with a single Thursday tossed in for good measure (May 21)—is about to launch for 2009. Each of the 14 hikes is at a different location in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Some are easy, while others are more challenging; the hikes range from 4 to 10 miles round trip. The date for the first one, at Hamilton Mountain Loop, is April 19. The final hike of the year, on Oct. 25, is at Mount Mitchell. The hikes are free, with a suggested donation of $5 per person. These are family-friendly events; minors must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited. To view the complete, detailed list of hikes and to pre-register for individual hikes, go to the Institute’s website, www.mshinstitute.org. Every litter bit hurts On selected weekends this spring, Clark County Sheriff’s Office patrols will be on the lookout for loose and uncovered debris loads that are being hauled on public highways. The aim is to reduce roadway litter and the driving hazards it generates by increasing public awareness of the problem and greater compliance with the proper transport of loads of litter. The program of these enforcement patrols is being funded through a grant from the Washington State Department of Ecology in cooperation with Clark County Public Works and the Clark County Sheriff’sOffice.
