Mayoral campaigns The local political season is nearly upon us with the two candidates for mayor of Vancouver setting dates for campaign kickoffs later this month. Vancouver city councilman Tim Leavitt has scheduled a campaign kickoff for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, in the Heathman Lodge, 7801 Greenwood Drive. Mayor Royce Pollard is holding his campaign kickoff from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, in the Java House, at the corner of Columbia Street and Evergreen Boulevard.
Science teacher gets Heritage High School science teacher Shana Kendall is the beneficiary of a $15,000 M.J. Murdock grant to Portland State University. Kendall was chosen to form a partnership with Sherry L. Cady, of the PSU Department of Geology to participate in national Partners in Science conferences over the next two summers. Kendall was chosen through a competitive process in the Partners in Science Program at the Murdock Trust. Kendall will conduct her research in the Characterization of Microbial Signatures and Silica Phases in Hydrothermal Silica Sinters. Upcoming Earth Day celebration Both Clark Public Utilities’ StreamTeam and Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation are holding a joint Earth Day celebration, this time on the Salmon Creek Greenway Trail, approximately 1 mile west of Salmon Creek Park, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, April 18. The free event includes a native tree planting, wildlife show, and EcoFair. The EcoFair will include exhibits from about 15 local businesses and organizations. Clark Public Utilities employees will be on hand to answer questions about conservation of electricity and water. Vancouver area Rotary and Inter-Act clubs will provide lunch for a suggested small donation. Advanced registration is necessary for the native tree planting space. Planting activities begin at 8:15 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m.; volunteers must be able to commit to the entire four hours. Volunteers will receive a free sustainable lunch and a commemorative 2009 Earth Day Celebration t-shirt. The event is rain or shine. coming to Clark for More than 800 students from 100 middle schools and 100 high schools are expected to take part in the 2009 Washington State Science Olympiad, being held at Clark College beginning at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, April 18, in the O’Connell Sports Center gymnasium. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., creative events such as “Crave the Wave,” “Science Crime Busters,” and “Wright Stuff” will be held at locations throughout Clark’s main campus. Awards presentations will take place in the O’Connell gym at 5 p.m. The annual event is free and open to the public. This year is the 25th anniversary of the national science Olympiad, which will be held May 15 and 16 at Augusta State University in Augusta, Georgia. Washington and Oregon secretaries Aiming to encourage greater civic involvement among young people Washington Secretary of State Sam Reed will visit Clark College on Monday, April 13, to mark the start of College Civics Week. At Clark, Reed will be joined by Kate Brown, Oregon secretary of state. The event, which is free, will be in the Penguin Student Lounge from 2 to 3 p.m. The Penguin Student Lounge is located in the Penguin Union Building on the college’s main campus. Clark College is located at 1933 Fort Vancouver Way.

open The Port of Camas-Washougal is holding an open house is from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in the Camas High School commons area to discuss plans for bringing the port's Grove Field airport into compliance with Federal Aviation Administration design standards. The drop-in style open house will include project overview presentations and graphic representations of the alternatives.
