Vancouver Symphony premieres
Salvador Brotons’ concerto

In his eighteenth season as music director and conductor of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Salvador Brotons now faces another milestone: his fiftieth birthday. To celebrate this occasion, the orchestra will present the North American premiere of Brotons’ A Catalanish Concerto at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, and again at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 24.

Both performances are preceded by “Opening Notes,” wherein Brotons talks about the music and the composers included in the performance—at 2 on Saturday and 6 on Sunday. The performance opens with Leonard Bernstein’s Symphony No. 1 (Jeremiah). This features mezzo soprano Angela Niederloh, a Portland native and a faculty member at Portland State University and Pacific University.

Joining Brotons for the premiere of his concerto will be, from Barcelona, the Cobla de Cambra de Catalunya, an eleven-member musical group dedicated to the playing and preservation of traditional folk music of Barcelona and the Catalan region of Spain. The cobla is led by its founder, tenora soloist Jordi Molina.

All performances are at Skyview Concert Hall, 1300 NW 139th Street, Vancouver. Tickets for performances are available by phone at 735-7278, at local outlets and at the door. For more information, visit www.vancouversymphony.org.
