$700 million Klickitat County
wind farm commissioned

The Cannon Power Group yesterday celebrated the commissioning of Phase I of its Windy Point/Windy Flats project near Goldendale in Klickitat County.

Expected to be finished in 2010, Windy Point/Windy Flats will be one of the largest wind projects in the world—26 contiguous miles of ridgeline along the Columbia River—covering over 90 square miles. Its anticipated capacity of over 500 megawatts of renewable energy will generate enough clean electricity for more than 250,000 households per year and will displace at least 800 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.

“We are very pleased to be part of something that has really helped turn this community around,” said Gerry Monkhouse, founder and chairman of San Diego-based Cannon Power Group.

The project is creating more than 150 jobs over the next two years.  As now planned, the project’s estimated total capital investment in Klickitat County is over $700 million.

Neal Hayes earns award for
research on global warming

Washington State University Vancouver research assistant Niel Hayes has been awarded the Research Assistant Excellence Award for his work on global warming. This is the first time a Vancouver student has won the award, which is presented by the university’s Graduate and Professional Student Association.

Hayes graduated with a Master's of Science in mechanical engineering this May and will receive a certificate and award stipend from the GPSA in honor of his work. Hayes has also been awarded the graduate student ASHRAE Grant In-Aid award for this project.

Hayes’s project is an eco-conscience refrigeration project studying an environmentally friendly refrigerant (Co2) in high-pressure mini-channeled brazed plate heat exchangers. Hayes’s faculty advisor, Amir Jokar, nominated Hayes for this award for his dedication, professionalism and consistent level of research caliber that represents the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) program.
