Mayor hustling federal dollars

Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard returns home after a three-day visit to the nation’s capital, where he was prospecting for federal dollars for several local projects.

Pollard and the City are trying to get $500,000 in federal funds to help with development of new regional law enforcement records management system that will be used by all law enforcement agencies in the county. He is also seeking another $500,000 to assist with a rebuild of the intersection at  Mill Plain and 136th in East Vancouver.

In addition to meeting with members of Congress the mayor also briefed officials from the U.S. Department of Commerce on the joint City-Port grant request for $2.8 million for improvements to allow development of the old Boise Cascade site on the waterfront and nearby Port property. Pollard was accompanied by Vancouver longtime governmental affairs consultant Mark Brown.

Hello Baby Book Bags programs back

Fort Vancouver Regional Library Foundation has been given a $10,000 grant from the Qwest Foundation. The funds will be used to create 1,000 “Hello, Baby!” Book Bags that will be distributed to new parents and caregivers throughout Southwest Washington.

The “Hello, Baby!” Book Bag program was created by the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District to help educate the parents of newborns in Southwest Washington about the importance of early learning and the significant impact reading to infants can have on early brain development. Early learning research has shown that 90 percent of brain development occurs before a child is old enough to enter kindergarten.

Health impacts of the
economy to be scrutinized

Leaders from throughout Southwest Washington will participate in a forum focused on how the economic crisis impacts the health low-income people and people of color. The forum is from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 27. at the Vancouver Community Library, 1007 E Mill Plain Boulevard. This event is free and open to the public

Initiated and sponsored by Washington State University Vancouver's Center for Social and Environmental Justice, the forum aims to spur further research into the impacts of the crisis by educating the community about policy initiatives and organize strategies for addressing the crisis.

"The health care crisis has deepened in the wake of severe cuts in federal, state and county funding for health services and other services that have a direct impact on public health," said Desiree Hellegers, co-director of the CSEJ at WSU Vancouver.
