Kearney Breast Center opens August 3

Southwest Washington Medical Center's Kearney Breast Center opens Sunday, Aug. 3. The 12,000-square-foot facility offers sufficient space to accommodate the community's need for sophisticated medical care and a host of other complementary services.

The new Kearney Breast Center is a unique community-supported project, says  Rainy Atkins, the medical center's chief operating officer.

More than 1,000 community residents got personally involved in the Foundation's Pink Power campaign, donating $4.1 million dollars to help make the Kearney Breast Center a reality. The total construction and equipment costs for the facilities were $5.7 million.

Last fall, Connie and Lee Kearney were recognized for their gift of $2.5 million in support of the new breast center.

Lee is a Southwest Washington Health System Board member, and Connie is a member of the Southwest Foundation Board and a 13-year breast cancer survivor.

VHA pumping in $9.5 million
in local construction projects

Economic downturn has slowed construction throughout Clark County but with renovation projects at Vancouver Housing Authority properties are keeping local construction companies busy into the early part of next year, reports VHA executive director Roy Johnson.

More than 30 local construction and construction supply companies are involved in the $9.5 million renovation of three VHA apartment complexes, Willow Creek and Cougar Creek apartments in Hazel Dell, and Fishers Mill apartments in East Vancouver.

Including all phases of the renovation work, more than 300 workers will have been involved before the last phase of renovation concludes in March 2010.

Pearson Air Museum and Pearson Field host 50thAnnual Northwest Antique Airplane Club Fly-in

The Northwest Antique Airplane Club fly-in that began at Vancouver’s Pearson Field Airport fifty years ago is coming home this August 14 through 16 to celebrate its 50th anniversary with one of the largest antique/classic aircraft fly-ins in the Pacific Northwest.

Cost to view airplanes on the field at the fly-in is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for ages 6 to 12, and children under 6 are admitted free. Additional admission applies for those who wish to view the exhibits inside Pearson Air Museum.

Local Democrats and Republicans to hold charity softball game

The leadership from the Clark County Republican and Democratic Parties announced plans for a Democrat vs. Republican charity softball game to benefit the local non-profit organization SHARE. The event will take place on Sunday, August 23, at Memory Field in Vancouver. The first pitch will be at 2 p.m.

The teams will feature rosters of elected officials, candidates, party leaders, and local activists. Republican Representative Ed Orcutt, Republican congressional candidate David Castillo, Democratic Senator Craig Pridemore and Democratic Representative Jim Jacks are among the many partisans planning to play. Democratic and Republican Party Chairs Dena Horton and Ryan Hart will also be taking the field.

Both Horton and Hart view the event as a great opportunity to help people in need. “There are a lot of hurting people out there,” says Hart. “We [the two parties] have been working together to plan an event to help a local charity. Our political parties may be rivals on the political battlefield, but compassion knows no political party, and helping people in need is something we all have an obligation to do,” he says.

Horton agreed and stated, “We felt it was important to show that both parties care about the real struggles people face right here in Clark County and that we could put aside political differences to help in a meaningful way.”

Tickets for the event are available for a $20 donation and can be purchased by contacting Ryan Hart at clarkgop@comcast.net, or Marsha Manning at info@bluedonkeys.com or at 254-2158.

SHARE leads the hungry and homeless to self-sufficiency by providing food, shelter, housing, and education. More information about SHARE and what they do can be found at their website, http://www.sharevancouver.org/.
