Mayor Royce Pollard and Tim Leavitt face off in a mayoral debate Vancouver’s Downtown Association and the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce present Politics in the Park from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, at Esther Short Park, 8th and Columbia Streets. The two mayoral candidates, Mayor Royce Pollard and Tim Leavitt, will go head to head addressing the issues important to Vancouver’s citizens. The public can also meet the candidates for City Council and enjoy entertainment, food and fun under the park trees. Bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating. This family - friendly event is free and open to the public. GVCC president and CEO Kim Capeloto will moderate the debate. Leadership Clark County announces new board members Temple Lentz (left) and Katie Foehl (right)Leadership Clark County announced the addition of two new members to its board of directors, Katie Foehl and Temple Lentz, who joined the board this summer. Foehl, a 2008 graduate of the Leadership Clark County program, has been in major nonprofit organizations throughout the United States and has been involved locally with non-profits since 1998; Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center Foundation, University of Portland, and the Clark County Skills Center are among these. At LCC, Foehl will continue to use her skills in business and education partnership development, cultivation of business and community constituencies, fund development strategies, and donor cultivation and solicitation to broaden and strengthen LCC’s community ties. Lentz is a recent graduate of the Leadership Clark County class of 2009. Lentz serves as the executive director of the Vancouver Rotary’s Festival of Trees, and has been involved in politics and the arts. She is currently the campaign manager for Tim Leavitt in his bid for the Vancouver mayoralty and has written several articles on local artists and the art scene for North Bank magazine. She will serve on LCC’s curriculum and marketing committees. Leadership Clark County is a 10 - month interactive training and development program to help citizens learn more about Clark County and assist in tackling the community's most pressing issues. Due to shifts in the economy, there is now very limited space available in the upcoming class, which starts Thursday, Sept. 17. Vancouver police traffic unit prepare for school’s return The Vancouver Police Department Traffic Unit is preparing for the start of the school year by enforcing the 20 mph school zone limit. Drivers are encouraged to monitor their speed, be extra cautious and attentive (remember there is a no texting law and a hands - free cell phone law in effect, too) as they drive through areas where students may be walking or riding bikes on their way to school. Parents with kids returning to school are also reminded that anyone riding a bicycle, roller skates, in-line skates, skateboard, or scooter needs to wear a helmet. For more information, visit http://www.cityofvancouver.us/police. 2009 disc golf challenge at Leverich Park The Vancouver Downtown Association member By The Bottle will host a 2009 disc golf challenge starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Leverich Park, 39th and M Street, Vancouver, to raise money to help maintain the park. There are only 48 spots available for this event. Cost is $20, which includes disc play for 12 holes, one raffle ticket for a guaranteed prize, lunch, and non-alcoholic beverages. The $20 fee must be received by 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at By The Bottle. Six volunteers are needed for this event and will receive a free By the Bottle T-shirt. Volunteers will not be able to play in the opener and will be required the entire day to perform various duties from set-up to clean-up and must be able to walk the entire course. People Sally Fisher has joined BergerABAM as project manager and environmental scientist. She has 27 years’ combined experience working on projects for state and federal agencies and local ports, which includes environmental planning and permitting for in-water and transportation projects, environmental site assessment, investigation, and remediation, design and contract document preparation for dredging and remediation projects, and construction support.
