Council of Homeless to host 10th annual luncheon and award ceremony Ross A. ThompsonCouncil of the Homeless will host its 10th Annual Hope & Action Recognition Awards Luncheon on Friday, Sept. 25, at the Hilton Vancouver. Nominations for this year’s awards closed on June 2nd, and the committee announced the 2009 Recognition Awards honorees: Gayle Rothrock, first executive director of the council for the homeless; Geri Hiller and Joy Gault, volunteer winter hospitality overflow shelter coordinators; Becky Taylor, Lake Shore Elementary (Vancouver School District); Alicia Dumlao, Emergency Shelter Clearinghouse volunteer; Suzanne Zamberlan, and John Zamberlan, Project Homeless Connect; and Shelby Wickhorst, Project Homeless Connect. Keynote speaker, Ross A. Thompson, professor of psychology at the University of California at Davis, will discuss how homelessness, hunger, poverty and related conditions in the family and society impact the personal and social development of children, and how hope and relief can be brought to families in need. Proceeds from the luncheon sponsorship support the Emergency Shelter Clearinghouse, Community Voice Mail and Community Housing programs of the Council, and outreach, education and advocacy efforts, and other projects of the Council. Learn to preserve your family treasures at Clark County Historical Museum Archivist Richard Engeman will be at the Clark County Historical Museum at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, for the First Thursday lecture from 5 to 9 p.m. to provide advice on preserving family treasures such as historic photographs, maps, drawings, and other paper ephemera. Engeman is both a historian and archivist with research and writing experience in Pacific Northwest history. A graduate of Reed College, he also holds graduate degrees in librarianship from the University of Oregon and in history from the University of Washington. Engman also specializes in working with historic photographs, maps, architectural plans and drawings, and paper ephemera. His writing has appeared in a variety of publications from the Pacific Northwest Quarterly to Portland Monthly. He also authored an award-winning unit of the Oregon Historical Society’s online Oregon History Project. In 2009, Timber Press released The Oregon Companion: an Historical Gazetteer of the Useful, the Curious and the Arcane, and White House Grocery Press issued his Eating it Up in Eden: the Oregon Century Farm and Ranch Cookbook. Charity motorcycle ride raises funds for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital The 4th Annual Credit Union Charity Ride, presented by iQ Credit Union of Vancouver, WA., and Fibre Federal Credit Union of Longview, WA., raised $41,000 to benefit Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland. More than 200 participants rode 156 motorcycles on a 145-mile ride starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, from the Camas branch of iQ Credit Union to Latus Motors Harley Davidson in Gladstone, OR. The ride has raised a total of $134,000 for the regional pediatric hospital over the past four years, with additional support coming from more than 39 sponsors, including financial and logistical resources from nine other credit unions from the Pacific Northwest. For the past 20 years, iQ Credit Union and Fibre Federal Credit Union have participated in charity events that have helped raise funds in excess of $8 million for Doernbecher Children's Hospital.
