Bridge design concept revealed

The volunteer Columbia River Crossing Urban Design Advisory Group (UDAG) made a recommendation earlier today on a design concept for the replacement I-5 bridge and two alternatives for the North Portland Harbor bridge.

Today’s agenda also included an update on the recent recommendation received by the project’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee for a covered pathway on the I-5 bridge, the transit recommendations from the Vancouver Working Group, information about a Sept. 30 transit station workshop on Hayden Island, design refinements being evaluated, and a summary of walls and landscaping for the corridor.

The Urban Design Advisory Group (UDAG) advises CRC on the appearance and design of bridge, transit and highway improvements. This bi-state group is led by Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard and Portland Mayor Sam Adams. The 14 members from Oregon and Washington contribute diverse professional and community perspectives on a variety of topics including architecture, aesthetic design, cultural and historic resources, community connections, and sustainability.

YWCA celebrates after winning Umpqua Bank’s Click 4A Cause campaign

Pictured here are the many that gathered for YWCA’s celebration for winning $15,000 from Umpqua’s Click 4A Cause campaign.

After Bank of Clark County, which was a longtime supporter of YWCA, was bought by Umpqua Bank, Jennifer Werdel, director of development and communications, contacted Nicole Stein, vice president of community responsibility for Umpqua Bank, about supporting YWCA. From there, YWCA was invited to apply to participate in the Click 4A Cause program.

Since the campaign kickoff, YWCA Clark County has won $15,000, after receiving more community votes than any other participating nonprofit during Umpqua's Click 4A Cause campaign. The other participating nonprofits were Boys & Girls Clubs of the North Valley in Chico, CA, and Kids Unlimited in Medford, OR, both also receiving donated funds from Umpqua.

Staff members, volunteers, and local officials joined together yesterday at 11 a.m. at YWCA Clark County to celebrate YWCA's victory in winning Umpqua Bank's Click 4A Cause campaign.

"Partnering with Umpqua Bank for the Click 4A Cause campaign has helped raise awareness of YWCA Clark County efforts," said Werdel. "The campaign allowed us to extend our community outreach through the world of social media, and in turn provide critical funding that fulfills a basic need."

Stein stated: "Community nonprofits are in need of financial support now more than ever, with many receiving less funding when the need is higher. We developed Click 4A Cause to help three nonprofits explore new online avenues to generate visibility and grow community support, while overcoming the financial challenges facing them in the current economy. We're pleased to be able to help bring these programs to life and to look forward to continued work with these nonprofits as they serve our communities."

Vancouver Symphony Orchestra raffles off classic Mustang convertible as fundraiser

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra has received the generous donation of a 2005 Ford Mustang Convertible from Carolyn Propstra, as announced by VSO Board Chair Betty Sue Morris. That car is being raffled off to benefit The VSO beginning today.

Tickets are available at The VSO office at 1220 Main Street in downtown Vancouver, or by calling The VSO office at 735-7278. Cost of each ticket is $25 or five for $100. A limited amount of tickets will be sold.

Drawing for the winner of the car will be held at The VSO Concert on Sunday, February 21 at Skyview Concert Hall. The winner need not be present to win.

Propstra is the widow of George Propstra, the founder of Burgerville, USA, which was founded in 1961 in Vancouver. Propstra is a long-time season VSO ticket-holder and classical music lover.

News Brief

Clark County Public Health, Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation, and City of Camas Parks & Recreation are advising the public to avoid contact with water at Lacamas Lake and adjoining Round Lake because of elevated levels of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). Water samples are being tested for toxicity, but the results will not be available until next week. Lacamas Lake Regional Park will remain open. Water in the restrooms and shelters is safe to use and drink.
