Gerald C. Nies named to Riverview Board of Directors

Gerald C. Nies

Riverview Bancorp, Inc., has announced the appointment of Gerald C. Nies, president and CEO of Nies Insurance Inc., to the board of directors for Riverview Community Bank and Riverview Bancorp, Inc.

Nies, a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, is a member of the Washington State Insurance Commissioner’s Agent Advisory Committee and served as the past president of the National Advisory Council for Safeco Insurance. He also is on the administrative board for the Clark County Emergency Medical Services District No. 2. and the board of directors for Northwest Heart of Gold Inc., a Portland-based nonprofit that raises funds for cancer research at Oregon Health Sciences University.

Nies was a volunteer firefighter and EMT and served for five years as the fire chief for the City of Battle Ground in the late 1980s. He was also elected to the Battle Ground City Council in 1984 and is a past president of the Battle Ground Chamber of Commerce.

Nies Insurance has been serving the Vancouver/Portland area for over 30 years, with over twenty-five insurance specialists in all areas of the insurance and financial industry. Nies Insurance has 30 employees, five locations in Clark County, and is licensed in five western states.

"Our board and company will benefit from Jerry’s extensive experience in business management, government relations and the insurance and investment sectors," said Pat Sheaffer, chairman and CEO of Riverview Bancorp. "Jerry has a great understanding of the regional business community and knows how to identify and take advantage of business opportunities. As the regional business climate improves, his expertise will be invaluable."

Vancouver is ready to roll with new recycling carts

Starting this month, residents in the City of Vancouver will begin to make the switch to new recycling roll carts, which will replace the old three-bin system, allowing Vancouver's residents to recycle more materials.

Waste Connections Inc., the city's contracted provider for garbage and recycling collection services, will begin delivering the carts to residents in October. Residents will receive advance information in the mail a week or two before their carts are delivered. By the end of November, all neighborhoods in Vancouver should have the new carts.

For additional information about the new recycling cart program in Vancouver, visit www.cityofvancouver.us/solidwaste. Information is also available at www.wcnorthwest.com or by calling Waste Connections at 892-5370.

Vehicle auction nets Clark County twice expected amount

Nearly 50 cars, trucks, trailers and other equipment were auctioned off through Clark County Department of Public Works last Tuesday at the Cowlitz County Fairgrounds, bringing in a total of $175,700.

Charley Masco, Clark County Department of Public Works’ operations manager for fleet and facilities, expected the auction would bring in only half that amount. “We were pleasantly surprised,” Masco said. “I think there’s a pent-up demand for cars, but people can’t afford a brand new car.”

Many of the vehicles were no longer needed because of staff downsizing in health, building and other areas of county government. Several vehicles also had relatively low mileage, such as a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu, previously used by Clark County Public Health, which had 21,183 miles and sold for $4,750.
