First Independent launches “premier banking” and adds new team members

David Beck and Gretchen Schlueter

First Independent has launched premier banking, with a new team and a full suite of financial solutions to meet the particular financial needs of a growing affluent market in SW Washington.

“Premier Banking” is part of First Independent’s wealth management department, which includes “private banking”, “trust and estate planning”, “brokerage services,” and “asset management”. “Premier banking” is designed for individuals with household incomes of $150,000 and over, or assets of at least $250,000, excluding their primary residence.

David Beck and Gretchen Schlueter have joined the new team as premier banking specialists and are available at First Independent’s two largest financial centers, Fisher’s Landing, at 1408 SE 164th, and Salmon Creek, 2515 NE 134th.

Beck has more than 15 years of financial advisory experience and has worked for both national and community banks. Schlueter, premier banker at Salmon Creek, has more than seven years of financial advisory experience in both the brokerage and banking industries.

Both Beck and Schlueter hold their Series 7, 65, 63, and 6 investment licenses and Washington/Oregon Health, Life and Disability Insurance licenses.

United Malt Holdings acquired by Graincorp

United Malt Holdings has announced the acquisition of UMH by GrainCorp, the second largest agribusiness listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. “This sale is good for our employees, and good for our customers,” says Jim Anderson, CEO of UMH.

Locally, UMH is the parent company of Great Western Malting, which is located at the Port of Vancouver. “We’ve operated here at the port for 75 years, and we’ll be here for another 75, as long as people keep drinking beer,” says Greg Friberg, president of Great Western Malting. Due to a major re-engineering as well as increased worldwide demand for malt, GWM has seen their competitive profile greatly enhanced in last three years.

Great Western Malting was formed in 1934 by NW brewers to ensure they had local and high quality supply of malt. Over time, ownership has changed but the employees of both Great Western Malting and the Country Malt Group continue to share the common focus and passion, ensuring its customers high quality products that meet the brewer’s needs.

Great Western provides 87 family wage jobs.

Classified employees of Evergreen public schools challenge community to "Stuff the Bus" for hungry and homeless

The Classified Employees of Evergreen Public Schools invite community members to help them "Stuff the Bus" from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at Walmart at 192nd Avenue and Fred Meyer on 117th Avenue.

"We have felt the pain of job and hour losses and want to help others in our community who have as well," says Debra Long, a classified employee at Silver Star Elementary and representative of the Stuff the Bus campaign. "We will be accepting non-perishable food items, toiletries and cleaning supplies to donate to Share, a nonprofit that serves the hungry and homeless in Clark County."

Donated items will benefit Share clients, including those living in Share shelters, Share outreach clients, and, of particular note, Share's Backpack Program, which provides food packs to children at risk of going hungry during the weekends. For the 2009-2010 school year, Share will provide 650 food packs each week to 28 schools.

For more information and a complete list of items needed, visit www.sharevancouver.org.
