Math and Science Day 2009 at WSU Vancouver
Southwest Washington MESA (Math, Engineering and Science Achievement) will hold its third annual Math and Science Day at Washington State University Vancouver from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30. Math and Science Day partners with local businesses, academic institutions and community organizations to provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math-) related exhibits, demonstrations and lab activities that, interactive, seek to engage middle-school students, helping them connect math, engineering and science to their everyday lives. More than 100 students from Jason Lee, Cascade and Hockinson Middle Schools are expected to participate in Math & Science Day 2009. Volunteers from the School of Engineering and Computer Science at WSU Vancouver, the Clark College math department, the City of Vancouver Water Resources Education Center, the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service-Abernathy Fish Technology Center, Oregon Health and Science University-Department of Behavioral Neuroscience, Bonneville Power Administration, Logitech, RNS Consulting LLC, and Hewlett Packard will also participate in the event. Turtle Place wins international recognition Turtle Place received the 2009 Award of Distinction for Public Spaces from the International Downtown Association. The annual achievement award recognizes the innovation and partnerships formed by the Vancouver Downtown Association, C-TRAN and the City of Vancouver, that transformed an underused bus mall into an urban plaza with public art, lighting, seating, and other amenities. The Arc of Clark County honors achievement, service and leadership The Arc of Clark County has announced that it will be recognizing individuals and businesses that have helped people with disabilities achieve a lifetime of success at The Arc of Clark County Annual Meeting and Achievement Awards Luncheon, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Heathman Lodge. Reservations are $25 per person, and table sponsorships, at $200 per table, include 8 reserved seats. Reservations can be purchased either online or by downloading a reservation reply card and submitting it with your payment. Mayor Royce Pollard and the Vancouver City Council will also be presented with this year's James Gould Leadership Award for being a leading advocate on behalf of people with developmental disabilities. The mayor, along with the City Council, has helped the Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation programs for people with disabilities grow from 275 individuals to the more than 600 who are currently being served.
