Community Celebration to honor Mayor Pollard

The public is invited to attend a community celebration for Royce E. Pollard, 3:30 to 6 p.m. Wed. Dec. 16, at the Water Resources Education Center, 4600 SE Columbia Way. Program will begin at 5 p.m. The event is free. Light refreshments will be served.

Pollard has been mayor of "America's Vancouver" since 1996. He was also a member of the Vancouver City Council from 1989. Before running for elected office, Pollard served his country for 27 years as an officer in the U.S. Army. Pollard retired from the Army in 1988 after fulfilling the duties of his last assignment, as commander of Vancouver Barracks.

"I have dedicated my life to public service and have never regretted it for one moment," says Pollard. "It has been my greatest honor to serve the people of this country and this community."

RSVP by calling the City Manager's Office at 487-8600 by Monday, Dec. 14.

SWWDC to release request for an estimated $1.2 million in youth services.

The Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council (SWWDC) will release a Request

for Proposals on Dec. 17 for the delivery of services to in-school and out-of-school, low-income

youth ages 16-21 years old in Clark, Cowlitz, and Wahkiakum Counties under the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), Title I. Total funds available are expected to be approximately $1.2 million. Actual allocations will not be known until May 2010.

The RFPs will be posted at www.swwdc.org on Thursday, Dec. 17. A bidders' conference will be held Monday, Dec. 21, from 9 to 11 a.m., at Clark College, Room Gaiser Hall, Room 213.

Please email your intent to attend to info@swwdc.org.

The goal of the program is to ensure that SW Washington youth are prepared for post-secondary success and to serve as a skilled and qualified pipeline to fill local area workforce demands. Specifically, successful bidders will work with eligible youth to assist them as necessary in completing their secondary education, developing work readiness and occupational skills, transitioning into post-secondary education and training and/or employment.

Contracts resulting from this RFP are anticipated to begin July 1, 2010, and end June 30, 2011, with an option for renewal for up to three years (through June 30, 2013) without further solicitation.

YWCA Clark County to host a community forum: “Standing Together Against Domestic Violence in Our Community!”

YWCA Clark County SafeChoice Domestic Violence Program invites community members, service providers, and local authorities to attend its community forum, “Standing Together Against Domestic Violence in Our Community!” The forum will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, in the YWCA Community Room, 3609 Main Street.

The forum will begin with a brief presentation. After the presentation, attendees will then have a chance to ask questions of law enforcement and domestic violence advocates.

Last week’s murder-suicide in Vancouver, and the 13 domestic violence-related deaths across the river in Oregon in the last month, are a call to action—domestic violence cannot be ignored. The crime of domestic violence impacts the entire community as a whole, including our families, neighborhoods, workplaces, and children who witness or experience the abuse. Our community needs to band together to support survivors and hold abusers accountable.

For information about the community forum, contact Lisa Watts, assistant director of SafeChoice, at 906-9143 or lwatts@ywcaclarkcounty.org.
