Schwabe's John Davis joins YPOV board John DavisThis month, John Davis, an associate in the Vancouver office of the regional law firm Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt, joins the board of the Young Professionals of Vancouver (YPOV). “As a young, passionate and ambitious attorney, John will make an excellent addition to the Young Professionals of Vancouver board,” says Mark Long, managing partner at Schwabe. “I look forward to seeing the positive influence John will make in his new role.” Davis focuses his practice in the area of commercial litigation. He assists in litigation ranging from property disputes to construction defects to insurance, as well as transactional work involving corporate, municipal, and employment law. He graduated from Willamette University College of Law with a juris doctor degree. YPOV’s goal is to provide a place for young professionals to connect, network and socialize. The club was established in 2006 and has nearly 800 members Jaime Herrera to run for Congress Today, 18th Legislative District State Representative Jaime Herrera announced her candidacy to succeed Brian Baird in Congress from Washington’s 3rd district. Herrera, 31, Camas, was appointed to the legislature by local Democrat and Republican county commissioners to fill a vacant seat in the legislature in 2007. Last year she was elected with 60% of the vote from her district, which includes parts of Clark and Cowlitz Counties. Her legislative committees include Health Care, Transportation, and Technology. From 2005-07 she served as a senior legislative assistant to Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers from Washington’s 5th congressional district. “America’s future is at risk. Washington, D.C., has been overspending America’s credit card for too long. Both parties are responsible,” said Herrera. “ Our future is being sold to China and Saudi Arabia in the form of government debt. Our jobs, our small businesses and the opportunity for families to have the freedom to work and prosper are at stake. I’m running because we badly need new leaders in Washington, D.C., who will stop digging us deeper into the hole of credit card debt. Look at Congress today. They’re debating health care bills that will raise the cost of care for average families and increase the debt by trillions.” “We need a whole new approach,” Herrera continued. “My pledge is simple I will place more value on saving your money than spending your money.” “I’m not ‘more of the same,’ ”Herrera stated. “I’m a woman who believes deeply that America is on the wrong track and that my generation is being called to stand up and change direction in Washington, D.C. In the legislature I’ve worked with both Democrats and Republicans on important issues. I’m not there to just go with the flow and follow the direction of party leaders. In Congress I will be an independent voice to control spending, create jobs, and lower the cost of health care. My only test will be what’s in the best interest of Southwest Washington, our families and our country.” Wells Fargo donates $9,000 to Clark County Public Schools Wells Fargo donated $1,000 to each of nine schools as part of its support of public education in Clark County. The nine Wells Fargo managers whose bank branches are located closest to the schools presented the check to the schools' principals. "We chose to give to schools that have a large percentage of students receiving subsidized or free lunches, as this is a strong indication of need," says Kellie Grant, Wells Fargo's Community Bank president for Clark County. The schools that received the funds were the following: Maple Grove Primary School in Battle Ground (represented by Principal Barbara Baird), Hathaway Elementary in Lacamas (represented by Principal Laura Bolt), Crestline Elementary in Vancouver (represented by Principal Bobby Jacobsen), Orchards Elementary in Vancouver (represented by Principal Vinh Nguyen), Mill Plain Elementary in Vancouver (represented by Principal Debra Alden), Fruit Valley Elementary in Vancouver (represented by Principal Debbie Elliott), Hazel Dell Elementary in Vancouver (represented by Principal Woody Howard), Martin Luther King Elementary in Vancouver (represented by Principal Debra Hale), and Washington Elementary in Vancouver (represented by Principal Theresa David-Turner). Wells Fargo has also developed a free, interactive financial education program called Hands On Banking in English and Spanish to teach the basics of good money management. The principals at today's event each received a copy of the program. "Public education is one of the major cornerstones of our corporate giving at Wells Fargo," added Tawnie Nelson, head of Wells Fargo's business banking team in Clark County. "About one-third of our total community involvement budget for southwest Washington and Oregon each year is targeted towards support of education."
