Richard Carson announces
he is the “independent” candidate

Richard Carson
Richard Carson announced his
candidacy for a seat in the Washington House of Representatives in
the 2010 election.
Carson currently volunteers time for CASE 31 (Citizens Against
Segment 31). The group is one of many trying to get the BPA to build
underground electric transmission lines that don’t have the same
health, environmental or visual impacts as the proposed 150 foot
tall towers. Carson has also been a trustee of the Hockinson Public
Schools Foundation and the Kit Carson Historic Museums in Taos, New
Mexico. Carson says: “I am a descendant of Kit Carson, and my roots
in this community go back over 155 years. That’s when Kit Carson and
Colonel John Fremont expedition reached Fort Vancouver. They created
the Oregon Trail and opened up the American West. We need more of
that same entrepreneurial spirit today.”
Carson will bring 30 years of budget and management experience to
the job. Most recently he was director of the Clark County Community
Development Department where he managed 165 staff, a $17.5 million
budget and reviewed over $600 million a year in new projects. Carson
holds a masters degree in administration from Lewis and Clark
College and an undergraduate degree in geography from Portland State
University. Carson is also a decorated Vietnam-era Navy veteran.
Carson is a nationally known writer about over-regulation and
property rights, and has published over 100 essays.
“Jobs and the economy are the central issues,” says Carson. “We have
the highest unemployment the state! Instead of raising state and
local taxes, we need to work to retain and create jobs.”
Carson is running as an Independent. “I have lost faith in the
Republican and Democrat Parties,” says Carson. “Both parties are
more concerned about the special interests who are lining their
pockets than they are about what their constituents want. Southwest
Washington needs a strong and independent voice!”
Carson is running for Position 1 in the 18th legislative district,
now held by Republican Jaime Herrera.
Carson, his wife, Sue, and
their two daughters live on 20 acres in rural Hockinson with their
three horses, three dogs and a lot of chickens.
Five Guys Burgers & Fries
restaurants focus on “food,” not “fast”

A
very popular and iconic hamburger chain in the nation’s capital,
frequented by First Lady Michelle
Obama and others, opened in Vancouver yesterday at 310 NE
78th Street, near Hazel Dell.
Five Guys started in 1986 in Arlington, Virginia, by
Jerry and
Jaine Murell and their sons,
and remains a privately owned family business. It has built a
cult-like following in the Washington, D.C., metro area, and has
received the “Readers Choice” #1 hamburger award for the last nine
years from Washington Magazine.
Five Guys is expanding nationally, with a goal of 27 locations in
Oregon and Southwest Washington within five to eight years. “We will
follow the same simple but effective formula that made Five Guys
number one back east,” explained president
Bill Marble. “Five Guys
Burgers & Fries are famous because they use only fresh ground beef.
Potatoes are sliced on site and fried in peanut oil to a golden
brown. Everything is made from the best quality ingredients we can
buy.”
Unlike most fast food places, Marble said, the focus of Five Guys is
on “food,” not “fast.” Because it takes a little longer to cook the
meal, Five Guys provides free in-the-shell peanuts for customers to
munch on while waiting for their order.
Marble said that the new Vancouver location represents a capital
investment of $500,000.00 that employs 45 to 55 people. Once it
attains its goal of 27 outlets in our metropolitan region, Marble
said, Five Guys will provide jobs for 1,200 to 1,500 employees with
an annual payroll of approximately $8.6 million, and with a total
capital investment of $13.5 million.
Because Five Guys in Vancouver expects to be busy and popular,
customers are urged to call-in their orders at
503-657-6049. Business hours
are from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
For more information, contact Bill Marble, president of Northwest
Burgers & Fries Inc., franchisee of Five Guys Burgers & Fries, at
