Wells Fargo pledges
$100,000 to aid disaster relief efforts in Haiti
To
help victims of the earthquake in Haiti, Wells Fargo & Company is
contributing $100,000 to the American Red Cross disaster relief fund
to assist with recovery efforts.
"On behalf of all our 280,000 team members I want to express our
sympathy for the victims and their families of this major
earthquake," says John Stumpf,
Wells Fargo chairman and CEO. "We have a substantial number of team
members and customers in Florida and throughout the East Coast with
families in Haiti. As Haiti continues to assess the damage from this
horrifying disaster, we want to do what we can to support relief
efforts."

Open house to examine
proposal for 78th Street site
The public is invited to review and comment on a proposed master
plan for the county’s 78th Street/WSU property during an open house
from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the Clark Regional
Wastewater District office, 8000 N.E. 52nd Court, in the Hazel Dell
area.
The proposed plan would guide the layout and programs for the site,
if approved by the Board of County Commissioners. The proposal calls
for spotlighting agricultural areas and programs to serve
educational groups, nonprofits, farmers and researchers. Facilities
where community members can gather for classes, meetings and
demonstrations also are included.

Pearson Air Museum to host
free presentation on T-6 trainer aircraft

Dan Hagedorn, senior curator
and director of collections at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, will
present “North American’s T-6: The World’s Most Famous Trainer
Family” at a free lecture at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at the
Pearson Air Museum, 1115 East Fifth Street, Vancouver. The North
American T-6 Texan was a single-engine advanced trainer aircraft
used to train Allied fighter pilots during World War II. Designed by
North American Aviation, the T-6 is known by a variety of
designations depending on the model and operating air force.
Hagedorn, the author of 17 books and more than 250 journal articles
relating to aviation, will speak in Pearson’s main hangar next to
the museum’s T-6 airplane. After his presentation, the author will
be available to autograph his books, which will be available for
purchase at the Pearson Air Museum Bookstore. For information, call

At
the Museum of Flight, Hagedorn is responsible for all collections
held by the museum, including more than 150 air and space craft. His
staff also manages the Bracken Memorial Library, the largest
dedicated aerospace library west of the Mississippi, the Dahlberg
Center for Military Aviation History Research, and the museum’s
archives of more than 2.8 million images and other collections. For
19 years Hagedorn served as both research team leader and adjunct
curator for Latin American Aviation at the National Air and Space
Museum, Smithsonian Institution. In March 1996, in conjunction with
the 150th anniversary of the Smithsonian, Hagedorn was named an
Unsung Hero of the Smithsonian Institution. Earlier, he had a
27-year career in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Discovery Middle School
recognizes "STEMester of Service" on Martin Luther King Day
Discovery Middle School will kick off its STEMester of Service
initiative by participating in an MLK Service Learning Assembly
Tuesday, Jan. 19, to honor Youth Service America and Martin Luther
King, Jr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said, "Life's most persistent and
urgent question is: What are you doing for others?"
In
honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. and Youth Service America,
Discovery Middle School will be highlighting three community
organizations that are service-oriented: the Fort Vancouver Regional
Library; the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Washington; and the
Vancouver Foundation. These organizations will explain to the
students how they help the community, how our students and their
families can receive help from these organizations, and how as a
young person each can volunteer and help any community service
organization.

SPJ announces 2009
Northwest Excellence in Journalism Contest, which is now online
Contest organizers in the Society of Professional Journalists’
region 10 announced the launch of the 2009 Northwest Excellence in
Journalism Contest today. The annual SPJ contest honors the best
journalism work in daily newspapers, alternative newsweeklies,
nondaily newspapers, magazines, online, radio and television.
“This year we’re making a lot of positive changes to the contest,”
says regional director Dana Neuts.
“These changes will make entering the SPJ contest easier than ever
before while reducing administrative and mailing costs.”
“For the first time, we’re making online submissions possible, and
we are expanding the magazine and nondaily newspaper contests to be
open to others within the region,” Neuts adds. “We’re excited to
take the contest to the next level.”
Contest entries may be submitted online starting today through the
end of the day on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, the deadline for entry.
Entry fees are $15 each, and the contest is open to both SPJ members
and nonmembers residing and working in Alaska, Washington, Oregon,
