FCSW appoints two new
board members

Diana Beult and Barney Speight
Diana Beult, director of
clinical & support services at Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center,
and Barney Speight, director
of the Oregon Health Authority, have both been appointed to serve
three-year terms on the board of directors of the Free Clinic of
Southwest Washington.
The Free Clinic of SW Washington’s mission is to provide and
facilitate access to free, compassionate quality health care for
children and adults who are otherwise unable to access such
services.
The “signs” of support
provide music to the ears

The Vancouver FASTSIGNS® sign and graphics center recently showed
its “signs” of support to The School of Piano Technology for the
Blind by donating time, labor and supplies to create vehicle
graphics for the school’s “Piano Hospital” vehicle.
FASTSIGNS® owners Barry Leung
and Teresa Kung got a chance
to tour the school and meet with faculty and students and learned
that the school is partly funded by the “Piano Hospital,” which
makes piano tuning house calls.
The School of Piano Technology for the Blind provides specialized
quality education to blind and visually impaired individuals,
leading to successful careers in piano technology, including quality
tuning, regulation and repairs. About 67 percent of the school’s
graduates have started small businesses while others work for music
stores, universities, school districts and churches.
“Our new vehicle signage has had a tremendous impact on our
visibility in the community,” says
Kathi Kapron, who handles customer service for the hospital.
“Several people have called for piano-tuning appointments as a
result of the signage.” The Piano Hospital travels to over 1,000
homes in Clark and Multnomah Counties each year to tune and repair
pianos.
“We have been able to directly see the benefits of community
involvement and know how important it is to organizations and causes
to help spread the word about their missions,” explains
Kung, who opened the
FASTSIGNS® center in 2008. “Finding significant ways to give back as
a small business owner is important to us, and, as a sign and
graphics provider, we have the ability to fill specific signage
needs for many of these groups.”
Community involvement is important to Leung and Kung and their
business. “It’s rewarding when you see how far your efforts can go
in actually making a difference,” says Leung. “We really encourage
other businesses to find their own way to get involved with a local
school or organization and give back.”

RSV begins construction on
new Aadland Dental Office
RSV Building Solutions, a Vancouver-based construction company that
specializes in new construction, remodeling, facility maintenance
and tenant improvements, recently began construction on Aadland
Dental’s new office, which will be located in the nearly completed
Aadland Building north of downtown Vancouver.
RSV will be creating a 3,200-square-foot dental office, plus an
additional 200-square-foot x-ray office with 3-D imaging
capabilities. The overall features of the new space include two
private operatories, five open operatories, a lab and sterilization
space, and a consultation room for client privacy.
In
addition to Aadland Dental, the 14,000-square-foot building will
initially be occupied by one more dental practice, with additional
professional space still available for lease.
“RSV has been a true partner in this process,” says Dr.
Kristine Aadland, owner of
Aadland Dental. “They pay attention to every minute detail and make
sure that costs are kept under control, which has enabled me to feel
a real sense of trust and confidence moving forward on this
project.”
Aadland Dental’s new space will reflect a sense of calming and
reassurance with the intention of creating an atmosphere that breaks
down the image of pain and anxiety that has become commonly
associated with going to the dentist. Her current practice has a
large percentage of patients who have a dental phobia, and Dr.
Aadland prides herself in her ability to reduce their fears.
In
addition to the calming atmosphere, Aadland Dental will utilize
state-of-the-art equipment and the latest technology, which also
helps reduce discomfort and increases the level of care.
High school students to
play IRS criminal investigators
Students from Union and Evergreen High Schools will get the chance
to work side by side with special agents from the Internal Revenue
Service (IRS) in a forensic accounting simulation at 2:45 p.m.
Thursday, Feb. 11, in Union High School, 6201 NW Friberg-Strunk
Street, Camas, WA. The simulation exercise will take place in Rooms
112 and 113 of the Leadership and Business Building.
According to the IRS's Daniel
Wardlaw, special agent and public information officer:
“Typically, people run in the opposite direction when someone says
'The IRS is coming!' But that is not true of the iQ Credit Union and
accounting students from Union and Evergreen High Schools. Around
two dozen of them will learn what it is like to actually be an IRS
criminal investigator as they 'play' one for the day.”
During the exercise, the students, accompanied by current IRS
special agents, will solve a real-world fraud case dealing with tax
evasion. Union High School will serve as the location where the
'honorary' special agents will conduct interviews, review financial
documents, carry out an undercover operation, execute an arrest
warrant, testify before the "grand jury" and more. This will all be
done for the purpose of learning the fraud detection and
investigation skills used by IRS criminal investigators every day in
solving real financial crimes.
IRS special agents are duly sworn law enforcement officers who
investigate complex financial crimes associated with tax evasion,
money laundering, narcotics, organized crime, public corruption
health-care fraud, investment fraud (such as ponzi schemes), counter
terrorism, and much more. They often conduct these investigations
jointly with other law enforcement agencies such as the FBI, the
DEA, and/or local police departments. IRS special agents conduct
undercover operations, and execute search warrants and arrest
warrants. They testify before grand juries seeking indictments of
alleged criminals, and often sit right next to the assistant United
States attorneys during trial.
