community. The president-elect is

Herrera sweeps Cowlitz
County straw poll
The Cowlitz County Republican Party announced this weekend that
Jaime Herrera won the 3rd
Congressional District primary election straw poll held during its
precinct caucuses. The straw poll was conducted Feb. 13, and was
open to all caucus attendees.
Herrera received 88% of the total straw poll votes. Her primary
opponents, Jon Russell and
David Castillo, received 7%
and 5%, respectively. Cowlitz was the only county in the 3rd
District that held a straw poll at its precinct caucuses.
“I
am honored that the caucus attendees voted for me by such a large
margin,” Herrera says. “In a place like the 3rd Congressional
District, elections are always won and lost at the grassroots level.
It is a major boost to know that the grassroots of our party stand
behind my campaign. We're going to count on all our supporters to
help me carry my message of job creation, controlling federal
spending and free market health care reforms to lower the cost of
care.”
Business leaders echo
govenors' message to move CRC project forward
Southwest Washington business leadership supports the clear and
direct message of Governors Chris
Gregoire and Ted Kulongoski
regarding recent developments which could impact the
construction of an improved Interstate 5 crossing of the Columbia
River and related improvements in the Bridge Influence Area.
In
light of the January 19, 2010, letter signed by City of Vancouver
Mayor Tim Leavitt, Portland
Mayor Sam Adams, Clark County
Commission Chair Steve Stuart
and Metro Council President David
Bragdon requesting additional review of the Columbia Crossing
Poject after years of community-based planning, Clark County
business leaders stand united in voicing their concern that project
delays will further stall regional economic development and jobs
creation.
Scott Horenstein, Identity
Clark County (ICC) board of directors chair, said: "The fact is, the
Columbia Crossing effort is the number one priority in our community
and, likely the most important infrastructure project many of us
will witness in our lifetimes. The proposal by municipal leaders to
call a halt to forward progress in order to undertake further review
and study of the fifteen years of development to date will simply
bog down the process, drive up the cost of the Columbia Crossing,
and goes against the spirit of community planning."
Business leaders from the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce,
Identity Clark County, the Columbia River Economic Development
Council, Vancouver's Downtown Association, and East Vancouver
Business Association agree that additional study and the
establishment of arbitrary "work elements" will only delay our
region's ability to succeed, not only in the Vancouver/Portland
metropolitan area, but in the increasingly vital global marketplace.
Jobs, freight mobility, economic development, and quality of life
issues are at stake.
"There is no greater economic stimulus for our region than the jobs
that will be created to build the bridge combined with the instant
increase in freight mobility that the new bridge will offer to our
entire region, not to mention the world," says
Don Russo, GVCC board of
directors chair. "Improving this bottlenecked corridor will increase
economic opportunities between Canada and Mexico and improve access
to our region's critical rail and shipping channels."
In
the January 19th letter, Mayor Leavitt, Mayor Adams, Commissioner
Stuart and Council President Bragdon stated that they "believe that
cost, physical and environmental elements of the project as
currently proposed impose unacceptable impacts on our communities."
Telecommunications
Commission to conduct annual review of Comcast performance
The
City/County Telecommunications Commission will conduct its annual
public review of Comcast Cable's performance, at 7 p.m. Wednesday,
March 3, in Vancouver City Council Chambers, 210 E. 13th Street. The
session will also be televised live on CVTV Cable Channel 23.
According to Fred Bateman,
commission chair, call-in comments and questions will be received
between approximately 7:20 and 8 p.m.
"Cable television subscribers are encouraged to give us their
feedback in person during the hearing, call-in, or send in their
comments to let us know how they think Comcast is doing," Bateman
says.
Written testimony will be accepted through April 2. Citizens
interested in submitting written testimony are asked to mail their
comments to City/County Cable Television Office, P. O. Box 1995,
Vancouver, Washington, 98668, or via e-mail at
tracie.looney@ci.vancouver.wa.us.
Comcast was granted a 15-year franchise in November 1997, to provide
cable television services in Vancouver and Clark County, Washington.
Under the terms of the franchise agreement, the Commission conducts
regular reviews of the cable operator's performance.
The eight-member Telecommunications Commission is a volunteer
citizen board that advises the Vancouver City Council and the Clark
County Board of Commissioners on all matters related to the cable
television franchise agreement with Comcast.
"Wings of Whimsy" to open
at Art on the Boulevard
Art on the Boulevard, a fine art gallery in the Vancouver
Marketplace, will open "Wings of Whimsy" on Friday, March 5, and
will continue to run through Saturday, March 27. The gallery will
feature new work from Jan Taylor-Taskey.
Taskey says of her new show: "Wings of Whimsy” is a combination of
my attraction to birds and the influence of children's fresh, basic
approach to interpreting nature. Working with birds as a subject has
been a growing experience for me as I generally work in a
nonrepresentational, abstract style. Overall, my intent is to create
art expressing the joyfulness of life and its complexities."
Taskey received her bachelor of science, education major/art minor
from Oregon State University and her masters of education at Lewis
and Clark College. As an elementary art specialist for the Vancouver
School District, Taskey currently teaches grades one through five.
Taskey says that enabling children to discover their art voices by
exposing them to a variety of medium is very rewarding. In return,
the children teach her about spontaneity and freedom of expression.
The First Friday evening reception on Friday, March 5, from 5 to 9
p.m. is open to the public at no charge and includes an opportunity
to meet Taskey and enjoy complimentary light refreshments and live
music. For further information, contact the gallery at
750-4499.
