WSU Vancouver hosts fundraising run

Washington State University Vancouver Mascot "Butch"

The Washington State University Office of Student Involvement is offering an on-campus 5K run/walk at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 24. There are 100 participant spots still available. The public is welcome, and parking is free. Non-student registration is $20. Student registration is $5. Sign up at www.signmeup.com/68940.

All registration fees support the Student Leadership Award, which is presented annually in the spring.

The race/walk will feature official timing (AA Sports), water, sports drinks and food. There will be live music, and a photographer will be on hand. All participants will receive a gift bag, T-shirt and a finisher medal.

The Cougar Community 5K is a challenging cross country course. It has steep descents and inclines. Surfaces include concrete, curbs, bark chips, dirt, mud, gravel, uneven ground, grass, wooden bridges, and wooden boardwalks. There will be multiple wet, slippery, muddy, dirty and rough areas with many tripping hazards. Due to the variety of terrain, wheelchairs and strollers cannot be accommodated.

To learn more about the Cougar Community 5K, call Shawn Romine at 360-546-9532 or visit www.vancouver.wsu.edu/cc5k.

Clark County CASA remembers forgotten children Friday

Every year, more than 200 children enter the Clark County foster care system due to suspected parental abuse or neglect. Clark County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) trains community volunteers to speak for the best interests of abused and neglected children in court. To raise awareness and support for these vulnerable children, the Clark County CASA Program will host "Forgotten Children: Partner with Us to Remember" on Friday, April 23, 2010, from 8 to 9 a.m. This free event will be located at the Clark County Public Services Building, Commissioners’ meeting room, 1300 Franklin Street, 6th floor, Vancouver, WA 98666. A light breakfast will be served.

The event will also honor two Clark County residents who have provided outstanding support for foster children and their families. Debbie Conway, a birth parent who works with struggling parents, will be presented with the Honorable David Soukup Award, Washington State CASA’s highest honor as Advocate of the Year. Clark County 20-year-veteran CASA volunteer Judy Fortlage will also be recognized. She will receive the G.F. Betteneski Award as the National CASA Child Advocate of the Year in Atlanta, Georgia on April 16th.

National sponsors of the Forgotten Children campaign are the Dr. Phil Foundation, the American Legion Child Welfare Foundation, and Jewelers for Children. Their support helps the national effort to bring communities together for foster children throughout the month of April, National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

For more information on "Forgotten Children: Partner with Us to Remember" or how you can be a CASA supporter or volunteer, contact Clark County CASA at 360-696-0167 or visit www.ywcaclarkcounty.org .

Share-A-Bowl benefits hungry children

Share's 9th annual Share-a-Bowl fundraising dinner will feature hand-thrown bowls by local artist Michael Metz, plus a concert featuring renowned artists Patrick Lamb and Michael Allen Harrison. The event will be held Sunday, April 25, at Skyview High School, 1300 NW 139th St., Vancouver. Doors open at 3:45 p.m.; event begins at 4 p.m.

Dinner includes a variety of soup selections, salad, bread, beverages and dessert; plus each attendee will take home a ceramic bowl created by Metz. The evening's program will include the presentation of the 2010 Emily Marshall Volunteer of the Year Award.

Metz is a Pacific Northwest native whose work has been shown in galleries throughout the region for more than 25 years. Each bowl he creates is hand thrown; he makes his own glazes and creates his own colors; no two bowls are exactly alike. Learn more at www.metzstudio.com.

Cost to attend is $35 for adults, $15 for children ages five to 12, free for children under five; a table of 8 can also be reserved for $280. Proceeds will benefit Share's Children's Hunger Initiative, including the Backpack and Summer Lunch Programs, which provide food for children when school doors are closed.

To purchase event tickets, visit www.sharevancouver.org (click on the Share-a-Bowl link) or call (360) 695-7658 ext. 3301.
