"Disturbance and Resilience" art show opening May 7

Early evening on May 18, 1980 by Steve Terrill

Thirty years after the eruption of Mount St. Helens, "Disturbance and
Resilience" brings together powerful images and words about the volcano
from the view of three artists. Jennifer Williams's paintings, Steve Terrill's photographs, and Valerie Rapp's writing combine to tell a story of the mountain and the resilience of life three decades after that fateful day in 1980 that forever changed the landscape of the Northwest. The show's opening reception is on Friday, May 7, during the First Friday Art Walk, from 5 to 9 p.m., and the show continues through Saturday, May 29.

A project of Friends of the Arts, Art on the Boulevard is a nonprofit art gallery whose mission is to establish a community environment in which the arts flourish. The work of over 50 artists, primarily from the Northwest, allows the gallery to display a wide variety of media and styles.

The gallery is located at 210 W. Evergreen Boulevard, Suite 300, at the corner of Evergreen and Columbia in Vancouver, Washington, in the Vancouver Marketplace Building. To learn more, visit www.artontheboulevard.org.

Jacks appointed to PCI National Board of Directors

Jim Jacks

MacKay & Sposito, Inc., announced this week that Jim Jacks has been appointed to the Policy Consensus Initiative (PCI) National Board of Directors.

Jacks joined the M&S Vancouver, WA, office in 2008, and has 15 years of conflict resolution experience.  PCI is a national, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting leaders in developing and pioneering collaborative solutions to the problems they face in their communities. PCI’s Board is co-chaired by two governors – one Democrat and one Republican – and includes legislators, mayors, and other leaders from 15 states. Jacks joined the Board because "they believe that business as usual is no longer enough to solve today’s problems."

Jacks also serves in the State House of Representatives, representing the 49th District and is up for reelection this year.

Union Ridge Elementary receives sustainability award

On Friday, May 21, the Department of Ecology for the State of Washington will present the Terry Husseman Sustainable School Award to Ridgefield’s Union Ridge Elementary School.

The Terry Husseman Sustainable School Awards promote sustainability and reward school efforts to reduce waste and increase environmental curricula. Over the past year, Union Ridge introduced a number of programs to reduce waste and help promote ecology including "Save Our Scraps" dedicated to composting leftover food and implementing reusable plastic trays and real silverware in the cafeteria.

"Our students understand the importance of environmental science and conservation," said Principal Connie Ford. "They are constantly looking for ways to help eliminate waste in all ways around the school."

The Department of Ecology will distribute $30,000 in cash awards ranging in size from $100 to $5,000 to the winning schools. The awards ceremony will be held at the Capitol Campus in Olympia, Washington.
