Concert to benefit Friends of the Carpenter

Jim Fischer and the Touch of Class Singers will present a Christmas Concert December 7 at Royal Durst Theater to benefit Friends of the Carpenter, a ministry serving the homeless and those in need in Clark County.

The concert will feature Christmas and holiday music during two performances at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students. Purchase tickets at the Friends of the Carpenter Office (750-4752) and at the Holiday Shop in Vancouver, 1708 Main St.

RSVP seeking volunteers

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is looking for a few good volunteers age 55 and older for the following assignments:

**The American Red Cross needs a volunteer scheduler to assign volunteers at each blood drive in the assigned area.

***The Southwest Washington Convention and Visitors Bureau is seeking volunteers for the information desk located at the historic Slocum House in Esther Short Park. Duties include welcoming visitors and providing information, ideas and brochures.

***The Humane Society for Southwest Washington is in need of Outreach/Education/Fundraising assistants to help carry on the humane education message to the community through tours, presentations, curriculum development, and events.

Anyone interested in these or other volunteer opportunities, please contact Jeanne Phipps or Bobbi Casanova at the RSVP office, 696-8221.

What’s true, what’s batty? WSU prof tells all about the secret life of bats

Christine Portfors, faculty member at WSU Vancouver, will present “Bats Are Good Guys: Exploring Truths and Myths About Bats” at 7 p.m. October 30 in the Student Services Building lecture hall.

Portfors, an assistant professor of biological sciences, will dispel popular folklore while discussing the beneficial role bats play in nature. For more than seven years, Portfors has studied how a bat’s brain processes sound and the connection between this process and how humans process speech.

The presentation is free and open to the public. Families and children are welcome. For more information, call 546-9434. WSU Vancouver is located at 14204 NE Salmon Creek Ave.

 

Woodland High School sponsors political debate

The Student Body (ASB) of Woodland High School will host an evening of political debate and discussion next Wednesday, October 29, 6:30 p.m. at the Woodland High School Auditorium.

The candidates for Woodland mayor and city council will attend to debate and discuss local issues from questions drafted by Woodland High School senior civics students.

Audience questions will be taken during the course of the program, in addition to candidate statements and prepared questions.

New guardrails coming to a roadside near you

The Clark County Public Works Department will install new guardrails at 11 locations throughout the county starting next month. Construction is expected to be complete by mid-December. The purpose of the new guardrails is to improve vehicular safety.

Look for shiny new guardrails at the following locations: NE Sylvan Terrance Road, just north of NE 110th St.; SE Woodburn Road, north of Washougal; NW Timmen Road, just south of Spencer Road; NW Timmen Road, just south of 319th St.; NE Sunset Falls Road, east of NE Railroad Ave.; NE Gabriel Road; NW Pacific Hwy, near Siebbler Road; NW Pacific Highway, near NW Toenjens Road; NW Pacific Highway, south of Griffith Road; Amboy Road, at Cedar Creek, just southwest of Haley Road; and NE Cedar Creek Road, at John Creek, west of Wright Road.

Drivers are asked to use caution while traveling through the above construction zones. Traffic through these areas will be restricted to one-lane during construction.
