Vancouver Fire Honor Guard attends service The Vancouver Fire Department Honor Guard attended the Washington the Washington State Fallen Firefighter Memorial Service in Olympia earlier this month. Four members of the Vancouver Fire Department Honor Guard, accompanied by Chief Don Bivins, represented the Department by participating in the ceremony to honor all fallen firefighters in the state. The event focused on one firefighter who died in the line of duty last year while fighting a wildland fire. InterACT to discuss Lewis and Clark events “A Historic Journey: Lewis & Clark” is the topic of InterACT’s November 6 First Thursday meeting. Members of the various local groups will discuss events to commemorate this historic journey. Program moderator and InterACT board member Ilene Ferrell says, “Diaries of the expedition record five campsites in present day Clark County, and declared the area the best spot for settlement on the western side of the continental divides.” The meeting is held from noon to 1:00 p.m. at My Friends & I Catering, 1010 Broadway, Vancouver, with lunch available for purchase in the meeting room. InterACT is a community discussion group in operation since 1995, a program of Identity Clark County. The meeting is free and open to the public; reservations are not required. Community invited to celebrate recycling day Nov. 1 — by recycling As part of America Recycles Day, CREAM (Computer Reuse and Marketing) will collect unwanted computers and computer-related electronics at a collection event on Saturday, November 1, 2003, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Clark County residents may bring unwanted computers and related items to the parking lot just east of the Water Resources Education Center located at 4600 SE Columbia Way. Computers that can be reused will be refurbished, reformatted, and donated to the Salvation Army. Those computers that cannot be reused will be disassembled and the materials recycled. Items accepted at the collection event include computers, monitors, televisions, printers, answering machines, VCRs, typewriters, FAX machines, cell phones, and other computer-related electronics. Items that will not be accepted at the CREAM collection include microwaves, toasters, hair dryers, or other appliances. These items may be donated to a non-profit organization if they are in good condition. Computers and computer-related electronics are also being collected at the following locations: Clark County Jail Work Center, 5197 NW Lower River Road, Monday through Friday, 9 to 11:30 a.m., and 1 to 4 p.m., and Philip Services Corporation, located at 625 S. 32nd Street, Washougal, 835-8594, First Tuesday each month, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The CREAM program is the result of an innovative partnership between the Clark County Public Works Department, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, the City of Vancouver, Clark College, Columbia Resource Company, and the Salvation Army.
