Portland Tribune Community Pride Design awards announced The Eighth Annual Community Pride Design Awards event is scheduled for Wednesday, November 12, 2003, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the City of Vancouver Water Resource Education Center, 4600 SE Columbia Way. The Community Pride Design Awards program was established in 1996 by various public and private organizations within Clark County as a means of recognizing outstanding buildings, development, and civic improvements that have had a positive impact on the community. Out of the 25 nominations received this year, eight will be honored for their outstanding and unique efforts in architectural design, community enhancement and involvement, public facilities, and commercial development. Three projects have been selected for honorable mention. As in the past, community leaders will present the awards to the recipients. Photographs of the eight award recipients and three honorable mention projects will be on display. In June, the Community Pride Design Awards committee sent out over 800 letters to the development community and neighborhood associations asking for nominations. The committee received 25 nominations by the deadline, August 25, 2003. This program honors developers, builders, and the community for helping to make Clark County a great place to live and work, both now and in the future. As the Vancouver School District puts it, “the three little pigs built three houses—one of straw, one of sticks, and one of bricks. The big, bad wolf blew the first two houses down. Fortunately, when Vancouver School District opened three new schools on September 4, 2003, they were all made of bricks.” Today from 4 to 6 p.m., the first of those sturdy brick schoolhouses, Ben Franklin Elementary, will be dedicated. Future dedications (for Washington Elementary and Hazel Dell Elementary) are set for November 4 and November 6, respectively.
