The Pearson Field Advocates for General Aviation (PAGA) annual meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7, in the Tex Rankin Theater at Pearson Air Museum, 1115 E. Fifth St., near Ft. Vancouver. The meeting will focus on the following items:

PAGA activities in 2011 and PAGA events planned for 2012.
Review of the new airport master plan by Willy Williamson.
A discussion with FAA tower personnel on operations, issues and procedures.
Pearson Air Museum programs and events, and opportunities for PAGA pilots to participate in educational activities.

Final two lantern tours at Fort Vancouver Feb. 4, Feb. 18

Fort Vancouver’s last two Lantern Tours of the season are coming up tomorrow, Feb. 4, and Saturday, Feb. 18. Visitors will each carry his or her own lantern as knowledgeable interpreters in period costume lead groups on after-dark tours of the Fort, which is part of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, 1001 E. Fifth St. in Vancouver. Complimentary cider is available. Reservations required, fee. Tours start at 7 p.m., and guests should plan to arrive no later than 6:45 p.m. Tours last one hour and 30 minutes. The cost is $10 for adults and $7 for children under 15 years of age. Open house for Vancouver’s new STEM school draws hundreds

Approximately 700-800 people from the Vancouver School District attended the STEM Open House on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Vancouver’s newest magnet school will focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The study of art and design principles will be integrated within the core curriculum. Students will participate in real-world learning experiences involving problem-solving and hands-on activities in a technology-rich, modern learning environment. The school will open in September, contingent on the state’s budget situation. The school ultimately will serve students in grades six through 12. In its first year, the school will enroll a limited number of students in grades six, seven, nine and 10. During the start-up year, the school will operate at two sites. Local winery garners top awards at San Francisco wine competition

Ridgefield’s Three Brothers Vineyard & Winery recently won three medals at the prestigious San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. The winery took home the gold medal for its 2009 Sangionvese, and bronze medals for both the 2008 Malbec Reserve and 2009 Brethren Cuvee. The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition is regarded as the largest competition for American wines in the world and receives over 5,500 entries. City seeks applicants for Public Facilities District board

Vancouver seeks applicants for a vacancy on the Vancouver Public Facilities District (PFD) board of directors. This recruitment is for a full term. Members may serve a maximum of two four-year terms. Applications must be received in the City Manager’s Office by 5 p.m., Friday, March 2. The PFD board typically meets once in June and once in December in the City Hall Council Chambers, 415 W. 6th St. in downtown Vancouver. Financial activities of the PFD consist almost exclusively of the receipt of sales tax credit funds and the transfer of those funds to the DRA in support of the Hotel/Convention Center project. Woodland High School scores high in overall excellence

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education have granted Woodland High School a Washington Achievement Award. Woodland High School is being recognized for “High Overall Excellence” as a top-performing school in the state of Washington. The award is a part of the state board’s accountability program, established to celebrate the state’s top-performing schools and to recognize achievement in multiple categories. The award is highly selective and based on a school’s performance according to the Washington Achievement Index. Woodland High School will be honored at a ceremony on April 25 in Everett.

Coldwater Lake paddling guide permits available

Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument officials announce the opportunity to apply for temporary special-use permits for outfitter and guide paddling opportunities on Coldwater Lake. Coldwater Lake is already open to the public for non-motorized boating. This will be the first time the Forest Service is opening up Coldwater Lake paddling opportunities to outfitter and guide companies. Only applications for human-powered kayak, canoe or rowboat activities will be considered. Applications, downloadable by clicking here, will be accepted on a first come, first served basis from Wednesday, Feb. 15, through Friday, Feb. 24. Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents “Wintertide” chamber music performances this weekend

“Wintertide,” Vancouver Symphony Orchestra‘s lively and intimate chamber music series, is the perfect complement to the larger, more dynamic orchestral performances. In response to widespread demand, the VSO is introducing this series, under the direction of Dr. Michael Liu. The first concert will be held tonight, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 309 W. 39th St. in Vancouver. A second performance will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5, at Zion Lutheran Church, 824 N.E. 4th Ave. in Camas.

The concerts will feature the Columbia River Brass performing exciting music in various styles from composers including Wilke Renwick, Samuel Scheidt, Eric Ewazen, Dave Robertson, and J.S. Bach. Performers include Bruce Dunn and Scott Winks on trumpet, Allan Stromquist on horn, David Conditt on trombone, and Doug Peebles on bass trombone. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students.
