The Miller Hull Partnership, the Seattle architecture firm that designed the new Vancouver Community Library, has received one of just four 2011 Honor Awards for Washington Architecture, for the Vancouver library project, from the AIA Seattle (an affiliate of the American Institute of Architects). The Daily Insider likes Chuck's Produce mainly because it's fun. Shopping doesn't seem at all like a chore in this local, family-owned store. And yes, there is an actual Chuck.
Besides beautiful mounds of fresh and locally sourced fruit, vegetables, bulk goods, dairy products, baked goods, and meat, shoppers can also choose from an array of packaged good, with an emphasis on local, organic, and sustainable, including the packaging. Prices are competitive, as they have to be, with several other organically-inclined markets nearby. But every dollar spent at Chucks stays in Vancouver, and, in our book, that puts it a notch above the other options.
Although all of that is fun, it's not quite as fun as the free product samples around the store - a common practice, but a draw nonetheless - and the open-to-view bakery, deli, and pizzeria. The Daily Insider's personal favorite is the gelato counter, with 10 or 12 different flavors to choose from, and every one achingly delicious. Go ahead, sample a few flavors - or all of them! - before deciding which to buy.
There's also a small but adorable gift shop and a sophisticated selection of wine and beer, which Chuck's buyers take great care in stocking. If you're a green thumb, head on out to the nursery and grab some vegetable starts to grow yourself.
