Construction of fairgrounds expo
building could begin next month

Construction of the planned $15 million, 100,000-square-foot exposition hall on the north side of the midway at the Clark County fairgrounds could begin next month, according to county fair executive director Tom Musser.

The exposition building is the key element in the county Fair Association’s plans for increasing year-round activities at the I-5 corridor site.

Although the financing package is still being worked out, up to two-thirds of the cost of the building will be financed county Amphitheater revenue , Musser says.

He says his office has already had inquiries for exposition space in the building which is expected to open  early 2005.

The final design of the space is not yet complete, but the  exhibit hall, which could be divided by movable walls, could be as long as two football fields.

If construction does begin in November so to will demolition of existing exhibit building space.

Musser says his staff is putting in a lot of creative thinking on how to house fair exhibits during the 2004 fair.

Homeless shelters turning away families; funding sought for temporary assistance

Homeless, families are being turned away from local shelters, according to Sally Erickson, director of the  Clark County Council for the Homeless.

An enormous increase in homelessness is being met by a cooperative effort of over 20 nonprofit, church and governmental organizations trying to provide emergency overflow shelters in churches and other locations.

Erickson says, cots and bedding are needed for emergency shelters, as are volunteers to help run the shelters.

A cot and two sets of bedding can be bought for $100, and she says, and an estimated 1,200 sets are needed. Donations will be accepted by the council by calling 993-9570. Potential volunteers for emergency shelter duty should call 695-7658, extension 309.
