Blizzard
disconnects garbage service
One of the
casualties of today’s snowstorm is garbage service
in most of Clark County, which was canceled today.
The result of
this, according to
Anita Largent, Clark County Solid Waste
manager, those affected customers will have to wait
until their next scheduled pick-up day for
collection to resume. However, Largent says,
customers may set out double the amount of garbage,
recycling and yard debris on that day.
The areas
affected are all of rural Clark County, Vancouver,
Battle Ground, La Center, Ridgefield and Yacolt.
If bad
weather continues, Largent warns, Wednesday service
may also be cancelled.
County’s
Public Service Center gets
official green building certification
Clark
County’s Public Service Building, the largest
governmental structure in southern Washington, has
earned the prestigious green building certification
by the U.S. Green Building Council.
The award for
having achieved energy efficiency and environmental
sensitivity will be presented to county
commissioners this week.
The $33
million, six-story, 163,000-square-foot building,
completed in December 2002, was designed by
Barrentine. Bates. Lee A.I.A.
Its design
and construction achieved 29 specific requirements
to get certification.
Moreover, the
building is 22 percent more energy efficient and 20
percent more water-use efficient than comparable
buildings.
This
translates into an annual savings of $17,000 in
energy and water costs, according to
Pete Capell,
county director of public works.
