Winter weather woes won’t stop

In Clark County and along the Columbia River Gorge, temperatures have stayed below freezing through most of today, with little change improvement in road conditions.

Schools and most governmental offices remained closed, as did many businesses.

Fallen trees and tree limbs have been the main hazards for Clark Public Utilities' customers, about 30,000 of whom have been affected over the past 72 hours.

By Thursday afternoon about 7,500 customers were without power, according to utility spokesperson Mick Shutt, who said that most customers’ power was off from a matter of minutes to several hours. He said Thursday utility crews augmented by ten contract crews were working around the clock to restore service. The worst of the problems occurred this morning, he said.

Cancellation of garbage recycling and yard debris collections in rural Clark County, Vancouver, Battle Ground, La Center, Ridgefield and Yacolt that began Tuesday is expected to continue through Friday.

Anita Largent, Clark County Solid Waste manager, says that all affected customers may double up amounts for collection on their next regularly scheduled days.

Fast Forward to July 9-25, 2004

Thirteen new homes will be shown during the 17-day Parade of Homes offered by the Building Industry Association of Clark County during 2004 run from Friday, July 9, to Sunday, July 25.

The view home sites are in Granite Highlands, Washougal, overlooking the Columbia River Gorge.

Curbside recycling to accept motor oil

Clark County is now accepting motor oil and antifreeze in its curbside recycling program and that service is available to all single-family residences.

To be accepted the recycling program, both products must be stored in one-gallon milk jugs and sealed with a screw cap.

Other kinds of hazardous household waste must be taken to recycling centers. For locations of recycling centers and additional hazardous waste information, call  397-6116, extension 4352.
