Library bond
issue vote already
meets validation requirements
With 11,828
absentee ballots returned to the Clark County Elections Department,
the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District’s $48 million bond
proposal has already reached the validation mark for the Tuesday,
March 9, special election.
Two measures are
before voters in an area that is generally bounded by the Vancouver
urban growth boundary, minus Fire District 6, which is part of the
Three Creeks Community Library area.
The first
proposition is whether to create a special library area. That
requires a simple majority. The second proposition is the $48
million bond issue. According to Tim
Likness, county elections supervisor, 10,818 votes are
required to validate that bond election. Of those voting, 60 percent
must approve the measure for it to pass.
The area
involved has a population of about 217,000 persons, of whom 92,937
are registered voters.
The 20-year bond
issue would pay the cost of almost doubling the size of the
Vancouver Community Library at its current Central Park site at Mill
Plain Boulevard and Fort Vancouver Way, building a new eastside
library of 25,000 square feet at the Firstenburg Community Center at
136th Avenue, and creating additional administrative and storage
space for the library district.
Besides absentee
balloting voters may vote at their regular polling places from 7
a.m. to 8 p.m. March 9.
