Entreneurial
Spirit Awards ceremony set for Saturday black tie event
Here is your
opportunity to meet and help recognize the accomplishments of six of
Vancouver and Clark County's brightest and most entrepreneurial
businesses.
The third annual
Celebrating Entrepreneurial Spirit Awards are the focus this
Saturday evening, March 6 at the Red Lion Hotel at the Quay. Awards
in six business categories will be awarded.
The categories
and 2004 award winners are: in the Transportation category,
Active Moving & Storage; in
Construction, Contact Electric &
Hardware; in the Retail category,
Runyan's Jewelers; in
Manufacturing, The Nautilus Group;
in Service, Little Italy's Trattoria,
Inc.
The Entrepreneur
of the Year recognition will be awarded to
Mel Aho owner of Aho
construction. Adding to the nights festivities will be a lively
presentation by national speaker and the world's leading
"scam-buster" Chuck Whitlock.
Award Dinner tickets are $50 per person and reservations can be made

YWCA Women of Achievement luncheon honors nine Clark County Women
The Clark
College and YWCA of Clark County’s “Women Inspiring Hope and
Possibility” 2004 Women of Achievement luncheon will honor nine
Clark County women at 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 12 in the Red Lion
Hotel at the Quay.
The nine, which
brings the total of women of achievement selected over the past 20
years to 161, includes for the first time a young woman of
achievement, Prairie High School student,
Melissa Barber.
The other 2004
honorees are Heidi Bixby,
Erika Hagensen,
Peggy Hays,
Deborah Nelson,
Jada Rupley,
Barbara Saur,
Bridget Schwarz and
Joan Skelton.
Barber is a
former Battle Ground Rose princess, who is president of the National
Honor Society, president of Natural Helpers and committee chair of
the Key Club. She has logged over 300 community service hours as her
commitment to helping others.
Bixby is chair
of the Fort Vancouver Regional Library Fondation, a volunteer for
Women in Action and the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce and is
a graduate of Marylhurst University. She is a financial planner.
Hagensen is the
key area coordinator of the Washington Reading Corps, recruiting and
training volunteers to work with low-income struggling readers. She
is a member of the United Cerebral Palsy of Oregon and Southwest
Washington board. She helped develop and administer the Pacific
Northwest Language Institute and worked with Aikobo America to
provide rehabilitation and growth opportunities through the arts for
people with disabilities.
Hays is
community resource program manager for the Division of Children and
Family Services, providing services for foster children in Clark
County. She also plans and coordinates events for abused and
neglected children, including Camp Opportunity.
Nelson is a
mediator for the City of Vancouver Community Mediation Service.
Nelson was selected as a facilitator for the New York City Town Hall
meeting where 5,000 citizens gathered to discuss proposed options
for the Ground zero site.
Rupley is
associate superintendent of Educational Service District 112. A
member of the Leadership Clark County class of 1996, Rupley is now
in her second term as chair of the LCC board of directors. In
addition, Rupley is a member of the Clark County Planning
Commission.
Saur is a former
Clark College Women’s Center program assistant. She was a volunteer
for the Older Women’s League, the National Organization of Women,
and Planned Parenthood. She volunteers to assist persons who are
suffering from the effects of another’s use of alcohol and drugs.
Schwarz, an
independent businesswoman, is chair of the Fairgrounds Neighborhood
Association, which was instrumental in helping make the Amphitheater
at Clark County one of the safest and most beautiful in America. She
is active in many fund raising activities , including her own U-Cut
Christmas tree farm that benefits the Humane Society of Southwest
Washington.
Skelton has been
an elected member of the Evergreen School Board since 1995. She is
active in children’s issues. Skelton and her husband
Jim have raised five
daughters.

This year marks
the 31th anniversary of the Superintendent's Regional High School
Art Show. An artists' reception is set for Wednesday, March 3,
6:00-8:30 p.m. at Vancouver School District's School of Arts and
Academics, 3101 Main Street, Vancouver, with an awards program
beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Eight pieces
have been selected as State Winners to compete against entries from
around Washington state in the Annual State Superintendent of Public
Instruction's Art Show in Olympia in April.
