Nine Clark County women being honored for achievements at YWCA luncheon tomorrow

Clark College and the YWCA of Clark County honor nine Women of Achievement during the 20th anniversary Women of Achievement luncheon at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in Red Lion Hotel at the Quay.

Over the past 20 years, 161 women have been selected for the honor based on their achievements that have helped build a stronger, healthier and more vibrant community.

Those honored are Melissa Barber, Heidi Bixby, Erika Hagensen, Peggy Hays, Deborah Nelson, Jada Rupley, Barbara Saur, Bridget Schwarz and Joan Skelton. (Pictures can be seen on the Insider website, www.dailyinsider.info.)

Call 696-0167 to make reservations to make reservations for the $30 luncheon. Admission for students and seniors is $25.

National accreditation commission adopts Clark County Sheriff’s gun safety guidelines

The National Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies has adopted guidelines for the safe storage of law enforcement agency firearms recommended by the Clark County Sheriff’s office.

Clark County Sheriff Garry Lucas said, “It is our hope that this improvement in national standards will prevent another community from experiencing the tragedy we have struggled through.”

The new guidelines adopted first by the county sheriff’s office fulfills one of the promises made by the local department after the daughter of one of the deputy sheriff’s was killed by the employee’s duty weapon.

Airport parking rates to jump

Daily parking rates for short-term and long-term parking lots at Portland International Airport will increase by $2 effective April 12.

The $8-a-day parking rate at the economy parking lot is not being increased.

New rates are $16 a day in the short-term parking area and $12 a day in the long-term lot. Hourly rates in all three parking areas is $3 an hour.

Applicants for Rotary scholarships for
one year study abroad being sought

The Rotary Clubs of Clark County and the Rotary Foundation are seeking applicants for Rotary’s $25,000 Ambassadorial Scholarships.

The scholarships provide for one year study abroad for applicants who have completed at least two years of college

The scholarships, available for vocational, graduate or post-graduate endeavors, are designed to further international understanding and goodwill and are available to more than 160 countries.

Applicants may not be Rotarians or relatives or dependents of Rotarians.

LaCamasLife will publish the Southwest Washington Visitors Guide for 2004-2005

A contract to publish the 2004-2005 Southwest Washington Visitor’s Guide has been awarded to LaCamasLife by the Southwest Washington Convention & Visitor’s Bureau.

LaCamasLife will be in charge of publishing and advertising sales, according to Kim Bennett, SWCVB president. For further information, call 750-1553.

Six neighborhood leaders will attend 2004 Neighborhood conference in Hollywood, Fla.

Six leaders from Clark County and Vancouver neighborhood associations will be selected to attend the 2004 Neighborhoods USA Conference in Hollywood, Fla., May 26 through 29.

Deadline for making application to the Vancouver Office of Neighborhoods is Monday, March 15.

Applicants should call the office of neighborhoods, 619-1142 for further information.

The Northwest premiere of works by local composers Matt Doran and Gordon Trousdale is being presented by the Clark College Women’s Choral Ensemble, the Brush Prairie High School Jubilettes and the Evergreen High School Chamber Singers at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Gaiser Hall on the Clark College Campus. Admission is $5 at the door. The concert benefits the Southwest Washington Center for the Arts.
