Rich Melnick
named district court judge
Richard A. Melnick yesterday
was appointed as a judge of the Clark County District Court.
The selection
was made by Clark County commissioners, who were filling a vacancy
created by the January resignation of
Randal Fritzler.
Melnick, a
senior deputy Clark County prosecuting attorney who has been with
the office since 1980, is best known for having started the
prosecutor’s domestic violence intervention program and for helping
develop the county Superior Court’s drug court program.
Melnick, who
lives in Hockinson, is an adjunct faculty member at Clark College
and is active in youth sports programs.
Melnick earned
his law degree from the Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and
Clark College.
Three other
Clark County lawyers competed for the position:
John Hagensen, Camas, and
Nancy Retsinas and
James Swanger, both of
Vancouver.
Melnick will
have to run for the office this November.
Third time is
a charm for Patty Murray
U.S. Sen.
Patty Murray (D-Wash.), whose
scheduled visits with the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce were
twice canceled, will appear before the chamber’s Advocacy Series at
noon Tuesday, March 16, in the Heathman Lodge.

from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 13, in the museum at 1115 E 5th

Troy E. Thomas has been
appointed to the Evergreen School District board of directors. He
succeeds Glen Gipe, who
earlier resigned from the board. Thomas had been a member of the
Orchards Elementary School’s Shared Leadership Team. Thomas is a
senior systems analyst for Electric Lightwave.

Airport parking fee increases was twice off by $2. New daily fees in
the parking garage are $18, and in the long-term parking lot, $14.
Parking at the economy lot remains $8 a day.
