Rich Melnick named district court judge

Richard A. Melnick yesterday was appointed as a judge of the Clark County District Court.

The selection was made by Clark County commissioners, who were filling a vacancy created by the January resignation of Randal Fritzler.

Melnick, a senior deputy Clark County prosecuting attorney who has been with the office since 1980, is best known for having started the prosecutor’s domestic violence intervention program and for helping develop the county Superior Court’s drug court program.

Melnick, who lives in Hockinson, is an adjunct faculty member at Clark College and is active in youth sports programs.

Melnick earned his law degree from the Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark College.

Three other Clark County lawyers competed for the position: John Hagensen, Camas, and Nancy Retsinas and James Swanger, both of Vancouver.

Melnick will have to run for the office this November.
