Six in Clark County selected to
take part in Neighborhoods US
A

Representatives of six neighborhood associations have been selected to participate in Neighborhoods USA, May 26 through 29 in Hollywood, Fla.

Attending the national conference will be Fran Blair, North Garrison Heights, Richard Durland, Sherwood Hills, Susan Nellor, Southcliff, Jennifer Reed, Vancouver Heights, Bridget Schwarz, Fairgrounds, and Bud Van Cleve, NE Hazel Dell.

Accompanying the neighborhood leaders will be Doug Ballou, chair of the Neighborhood Advisory Council of Clark County, Adrienne DeDona, Vancouver Office of Neighborhoods, and Holly Gaya, Clark County Neighborhood Outreach Program.

Work begins at Firstenburg Center

Trees were being cleared this week at NE 136th Avenue and Mill Plain Boulevard, the site of the future 75,000-square-foot Firstenburg Community Center.

Usable fir trees will be milled into lumber and finish paneling for use in construction. Other trees will be used in Burnt Bridge Creek stream restoration.

The community center and recreation facility is to be completed in mid-2005.

Downtown library Sunday
hours shifted by one

Vancouver Community Library patrons, responding to a survey by the Fort Vancouver Regional Library district, elected to open the library an hour earlier on Sunday and to have the library close an hour earlier.

The new hours, effective Sunday, April 11, will be noon to 8 p.m.

Patrons have suggested closing the library earlier because of lack of public transportation late on Sunday.

An average of 1,200 people visit the downtown library on Sunday, about 150 visits an hour, according to librarian Doreen Turpin. The library averages 200 patrons an hour during other days of the week.

5,000 brown trout to attend Lacamas Lake water festival and Round Lake fishing derby

Children 14 and under are encouraged to fish for one of 5,000 brown trout stocked at Round Lake north of Camas Saturday during the city’s Lacamas Lake Water Festival and Kids Fishing Derby from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 10.

Fishers, who must bring their own fishing pole and bait, may keep only one fish each, but the fish will be measured by the Camas Fire Department and entered into the festival fishing derby.

In addition to kids fishing there will be fly tying demonstrations, boat safety demonstrations, hiking tours, environmental displays and entertainment for kids. The gathering place for the festival, is Lacamas Lake Park on SE Everett Road. For further information, call Laura Lean, 397-6060, extension 7703.

2good2toss.com local cyberspace flea market, garage sale, beats landfill option

Vancouver and Clark County have joined with other Washington communities and the state Department of Ecology in sponsoring a website, 2good2toss.com, to provide a place to sell or give away unwanted but usable stuff that otherwise might be headed to the dump.

The promotional blurb for the free service states: “Save that still serviceable refrigerator from the landfill and find it a home. Locate the wallboard you need to finish your basement. And do it for free! Think of it as an online garage sale, where the valuable items are free or low cost.”

For further information, click on www.2good2toss.com, or call Sally Fisher or Bob Patterson, Clark County waste reduction specialists, 397-6118, extension 4939.
