Firstenburg contribution will complete community athletic fields at Ridgefield

Ed and Mary Firstenburg have entered into a partnership with the Ridgefield Booster Club, the Lewis River Soccer Club and the Ridgefield School District to complete the phase II expansion of athletic fields at Ridgefield High School.

The athletic complex will serve the community as well as the high school.

The Firstenburg’s $150,000 contribution is being added to $138,000 already raised in the community for phase I.

The new sports center will have a practice football field, which will also be used for track and field events, and two full-sized soccer fields.

Firstenburg’s first job, after earning an MBA at the University of Washington, was as head of the commercial department at Ridgefield High School, where he taught business and shorthand.

The sports center will be named the First Independent Bank Sports Complex.

According to Mark Burton, president of the Lewis River Soccer Club, the community is still being asked for another $12,000 to round out phase I.

Library board of trustees to discuss bond election during retreat at White Salmon

The Fort Vancouver Regional Library District board of trustees, meeting in a day-and-a-half retreat session this week in the White Salmon Valley Community Library, is expected to discuss the March 9 election results in which voters approved a library voting district (Greater Vancouver Capital Facilities Area) by slightly more than 60 percent but failed to give the proposed $48 million bond issue approval. The 57 percent majority yes-vote the measure got was shy of the mandatory 60 percent supermajority.

The retreat is from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 15, and 9 a.m. to noon Friday, April 16. A regular public meeting will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

All of the board’s retreat sessions are open to the public, but public comment will be accepted during the 6 p.m. meeting only.

The $48 million project would have doubled the size of the downtown Vancouver Community Library and greatly expanded the east Vancouver library in a new location near the Firstenburg Community Center.

Battle Ground voters are being asked to approve a $7.6 million, 20-year bond issue and a $368,000 special levy at a Tuesday, April 27, special election, the absentee ballots for which were sent by mail Friday.

The bond issue would enable the city to develop existing neighborhood parks and open space and to improve parks and facilities, including sports fields and hiking trails.
