Scott Horenstein 2004
First Citizen
Scott Horenstein,
Vancouver attorney, who “over several decades has developed a
record of exceptional and passionate service in Southwest
Washington,” has been named Clark County’s First Citizen for
2004 by the Community Foundation.
Horenstein is
distinguished by the variety of activities he participates in,
according to one of several nominators. Horenstein helps provide
free legal services to the disadvantaged, works with the Boys
and Girls Club of Southwest Washington, and supports parks and
recreation and the Clark County Fair. His range of civic
activities includes Identity Clark County and the Vancouver
School District.
Surprised by the news
yesterday, Horenstein’s comment was typical: “I’m hugely
surprised. Wow!”
Horenstein will be
honored at a 4-to-6 p.m. reception, Thursday, June 3, in the Red

Vancouver schools
losing Randi Holland
Randi Holland, who has
served as a member of the Vancouver School District Board since
1987, Monday announced she is resigning in order to devote more
time to her family.
The veteran school board
member was serving as president of the five-member board this
year.
Superintendent
John Erickson says the
board is accepting applications for the position and expects to
name a replacement in mid-May.

registered voters living within the school district. For further

Six Clark County
Skills students earn berths in national Vocational Industrial
Club finals
Six Clark County Skills
Center students, having won state-level Vocational Industrial
Clubs of America awards, will travel to Kansas City, Mo., in
June to compete for national championships.
Nathan Kreig, Evergreen
High School senior, Christina
Alicia, Heritage High School senior, and
Justin Weathers, Heritage
High School junior, each won first place awards in state VICA
competition recently in Tacoma.
Also going on to the
national championships are seniors
Juliana Vanderford,
Mountain View High School,
Stephanie Cook, Woodland High School, and
Tina Cuykendall, Hudson’s
Bay High School.
Although enrolled in
their respective high schools, the students spend part of each
school day in advanced Skills Center vocational classes.
Public hearing on
amphitheater conditional use permit traffic changes is Thursday
A public hearing on
proposed changes in the Amphitheater at Clark County’s
conditional use permit that would allow modifications in traffic
controls for concerts is at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 22, in the
Elections and Auto Licensing Building, 1408 Franklin Street.
The first concert of the
2004 season at the amphitheater is Sunday, May 16, headlined by
Christina Aguilera.

property taxes due April 30
Clark County Treasurer
Doug Lasher reminds
property owners that the first half of their 2004 taxes are due
in the county Treasurer’s office Friday, April 30.
Property owners whose
property taxes are not paid by a mortgage holder and who have
not received a 2004 tax statement should call Lasher at
397-2252, or an automated
response system, 397-6054.

Don Bivins, chief of the
Vancouver Fire Department, has been appointed to the state
Emergency Management Council by Gov.
Gary Locke. The council
advises the governor and the assistant director of
Emergency Management on all matters relating to emergency
services and acts as an arbitration body to settle search and
rescue claims between the state and local governments.

Washougal, a Clark College administrator, has been appointed to
the state Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Advisory Committee by
Gov. Gary Locke.
