200 Russians expected
in June; committee searching for housing, asking for donations
An unprecedented 200
Russian visitors expected for the June commemoration of the 1937
transpolar flight to Vancouver by a single-engine Russian
airplane piloted by Valery Chkalov, has put the Valery Chkalov
Cultural Exchange Committee on a full court press to find
housing space and cover expenses.
This year is the 100th
anniversary of the Russian hero Chkalov’s birth, and it is being
celebrated throughout the year in Russia.
According to
Jess Frost, exchange
committee chair, the needs are, in order: cash donations,
in-kind meals and snacks from area restaurants, items for gifts
and gift baskets, Russian- or German-speaking interpreters,
drivers and large vans and buses, and administrative help.
For further information,
call Frost at 735-0635,

Turn off TV and swim
free tonight
Swimming is free between
6:30 and 8:30 p.m. this evening in the Jim Parsley Center pool,
2901 Falk Road, as part of Kaiser Permanente’s participation in
National TV Turnoff Week.
Kaiser, according to
chief of pediatrics Rasjad Lints,
Vancouver, is picking up the tab for swimmers. All they have to
do is show up.
Lack of exercise and too
many hours spent watching TV are contributing to an epidemic of
obesity, and constitute a serious threat to health, says Lints.
For further fat-fighting
facts, call (503) 813-4820.
