Discovery Walk Festival prompting thousands to walk
throughout Vancouver this weekend
The 8th annual Discovery
Walk Festival is bringing out thousands of walkers and
bicyclists to Vancouver this weekend, beginning with the Mayor’s
Walk that begins between 4 and 6 p.m. today and ends at 9 p.m.
Opening ceremonies are at 6:30 p.m.
Sanctioned by the
International Marching League, the walking festival attracts
walkers and walking teams from Norway, Japan, Germany, Britain
and North America.
Sponsored by Southwest
Washington Medical Center and New Balance Shoes, registration,
and the beginning and end of all events, is at the Red Lion
Hotel at the Quay.
Walking events range from
3 to 42 kilometers, and cycling events range from 25 to 50
kilometers. Swimming events are at the Hough Pool.
The Discovery walk is
also part of the SWMC’s Passport to Wellness program. The
medical center is offering free fitness workshops from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

events is $8 per event, except for children 12 and under, which

Nez Perce Memorial event
includes peace pipe ceremony with military veterans
All military veterans are
invited to participate in the peace pipe ceremony with the Nez
Perce Indians during the Indian nation’s seventh annual memorial
commemoration at Vancouver Barracks Saturday, April 24.
The two-and-a-half-hour
memorial, which is proffered to heal old wounds, pays ancestral
tribute to the Chief Redheart band, which was imprisoned at
Vancouver Barracks during the winter of 1877-78.
The public is invited to
watch and listen to the speeches, singing and dancing, and the
riderless horse procession. The ceremony begins about 10 a.m. at
the barracks north of the Fort Vancouver National Monument
parking area on E 5th Street. Visitors are urged to bring
blankets and lawn chairs.

Fair in full bloom
Clark Public Utilities’
Home and Garden Idea Fair opened today at the Clark County
Fairgrounds. It will be open until 8 p.m. tonight and Saturday,
and until 5 p.m. Sunday. The fair opens at 9 a.m. Saturday and
10 a.m. Sunday.
The fair hosts the
largest plant sale in the Vancouver-Portland metropolitan
region. Admission is free, but parking is $3. Donations for
Operation Warm Heart will be accepted.

Jennifer Peterson has
been elected to the Tea Advisory Board of the Specialty Tea
Institute, a division of the Tea Association U.S.A. Peterson is
a master tea blender and owner of Carnelian Rose Tea Co., 1803
