YWCA auction raises over $300,000
Nearly 900 persons
attended the YWCA of Clark County auction last Saturday in the
Oregon Convention Center, raising a record $305,000 for YWCA
programs, according to co-chairs
Susan Wolff and Carol
Olson.
The money will be used
for ongoing programs for women and children in Clark County,
including the SafeChoice Domestic Violence Program, Court
Appointed Special Advocates, the Sexual Assault Program, the Y
Care Children’s Program, and Independent Living Skills Program.
Tanya Baker going to
Istanbul on
Rotary Group Exchange Program
Tanya Baker, solid waste
analyst for the City of Vancouver, is part of a team of Pacific
Northwest professionals who leave this week for Istanbul to
spend a month in Turkey sharing information about solid waste
and recycling issues.
Baker is sponsored by the
Vancouver Rotary Club, which is participating in the Rotary
Group Study Exchange 2004 Program, a vocational and cultural
exchange opportunity for business and professional men and women
between the ages of 25 and 40.
Participants follow an
extensive and rigorous four-week program including observation,
discussion, and study of team members' vocations as practiced in
the host country.
The program also seeks to
promote an appreciation of cultural diversity and dispel
misconceptions and prejudices.
City seeks Volunteer
firefighters
Vancouver and Fire
District 5 are seeking volunteer firefighters for formal
training.
Volunteers who
successfully complete training work with the professional
firefighters in training and emergency response programs and
perform civic duties, including working at school functions,
fairs and sporting events.
Volunteer positions are
open to those who have a high school diploma or the equivalent,
who are at least 20 years old, and who pass a written
examination, physical abilities test and background
investigation. Applicants must also be certified as Emergency
Medical Technicians at the end of the training course.

Benton collecting
endorsements in senate bid
The Washington State Farm
Bureau has endorsed Republican State Sen.
Don Benton’s bid for
reelection to a third term as a 17th District, the legislator
reports.
Benton is also endorsed
by Washington Association of Firefighters, the Washington
Council of Police and Sheriffs, the Washington State Patrol
Troopers Association, and the Washington Property Rights
Alliance.
Benton is chair of the
Senate Services, Insurance and Housing Committee, vice chair of
the Transportation Committee and a member of the Economic
Development Committee.
Benton is being
challenged by Democrats John T.
Davis and Paul G.
Waadevig.
County Democrats to
open Hazel Dell office
The Clark County
Democratic Central Committee will open an office for candidates
and their staffs at 7610 NE 5th Avenue in Hazel Dell Tuesday,
June 1.
The office, which will
have 20 telephone lines and a DSL Internet connection, will be
managed by volunteers during weekdays.
Getting worse before
it gets better
Traffic delays are
expected to worsen as work to realign Highway 99 and NE 20th
Avenue at NE 134th Street begins this month.
The realignment is part
of Clark County’s transportation improvement plan in the Salmon
Creek area that includes Interstate Highways 5 and 205, and NE
23rd Avenue and NE 139th Street, one of the slowest traffic
corridors in southern Washington.
Completion of the first
phase is expected this fall. Bridge work will be completed next
spring.
