Despite differences,
relationships among players in search for water remain cordial
Clark Public Utilities
has not yet decided whether to appeal a recent ruling by the
state Pollution Control Hearings Board that requires it to
conduct a complete environmental analysis before putting a test
well into service east of Vancouver Lake.
The Port of Vancouver is
concerned that putting into operation the 650-foot test well
would affect a plume of contaminated water the port is working
on to contain.
The City of Vancouver has
also expressed concern that a well field between Vancouver Lake
and Fruit Valley Road would dampen prospects of future
industrial development along Fruit Valley Road.
Last month, however,
Clark Public Utilities and the city entered into an agreement to
mutually drill test wells for drinking water on the other side
of Vancouver Lake near the Columbia River.
Today, water utilities
director Doug Quinn said
relationships among the players could be described as cordial.
Quinn described meetings
between the port, which continues to oppose the west Vancouver
Lake site, professional and directed toward finding solutions.
Columbia Springs
Environmental Education Center gets $50,000 boost from state
A $50,000 appropriation
received by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife for the
Vancouver Trout Hatchery will allow the Columbia Springs
Environmental Education Center to improve educational offerings
for students and teachers, according to Columbia Springs
Foundation board member Ted
Stubblefield.
The fish hatchery is part
of the educational center, which is supported by a partnership
of the Department of Fish and Wildlife, Clark Public Utilities,
Evergreen Public Schools, Clark College and the City of
Vancouver.
The center, located at
12208 SE Evergreen Highway, is open to the public from 7:30 a.m.
to dusk every day.
Visitors can hike on
nature trails, observe birds and wildlife, and visit a working
trout hatchery.
County growth rate
slowing a bit
Compared to the annual
growth rate of new residential customers a year ago of 2.65
percent, statistics released today by Clark Public Utilities
show that the rate has slowed to 2.02 percent for the first
three months of the year.
Last year the electric
utility hooked up 4,011 new residential customers. So far this
year the utility has signed up 766 new residential customers.
