Modest sales tax increase would make a
huge difference in mass transit options
Clark County voters are
being asked on Nov. 4 to approve a countywide .03 percent sales
tax increase to cover the revenues lost by C-TRAN by the 1999
repeal of motor vehicle taxes.
Over the past 5 years the
transit agency has had to dig into reserves and cut back
services to balance its budget. The agency is now faced with
either increasing its sales tax base to improve service or to
making drastic cuts in service to balance its annual budget.
The C-TRAN board, at its
regular 4:30 p.m. meeting Tuesday, will hear a formal
presentation of the proposed 20-year plan supported by the sales
tax increase.
The improved plan is
designed to cope with growth of cities in Clark County as well
as with increased demand from major destinations, including
Legacy Hospital, Washington State University Vancouver, and
business developments in east Vancouver.
The new plan envisions
continued seven-day-a-week service, increased commuter service,
new park and ride lots, and innovative delivery of service such
as the collector network now providing nearly on-demand
transportation.
The C-TRAN board, which
was briefed last month on the plan that would be implemented if
the sales tax proposal is defeated, will hear the proposed
expansion plan during its 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, meeting in
C-TRAN’s administrative offices, 2425 NE 65th Avenue.
