Free day-long seminar offers time
savers for permitting process under new building code
A free seminar designed
to provide builders, developers, architects, designers and
engineers with information to speed them through the Clark
County permitting process under the new International
residential Building Code, which becomes effective July 1, is
being offered by the Clark County Community Development Building
Division from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 19, in the 6th
floor hearing room of the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin
Street.
Topics include general
submittal requirements, foundations, footings, drainage,
framing, beams, decks, life-safety provisions and the energy
code.
Participants will receive
a booklet containing new plot plan requirements, building permit
application information and details of major code changes.
Refreshments will be
served, but participants are responsible for their own lunches.

Helen Baller second
graders at
Oaks Park to learn about physics
Second graders from the
Helen Baller Elementary School in Camas today are at Oaks Park
in Portland, learning about physics in the real world, with Mad
Science of Portland &Vancouver.
The school’s second grade
teachers, Ellen Doyle,
Shelly Haase,
George Bailey and
Tiffany Thomas, who
organized the unusual field trip, say that learning is more
beneficial when students have the opportunity to participate in
real-world applications.
The students will learn
about, among other things, balance, motion, stability,
rotational motion, rolling systems, central axis and pushing and
pulling, while sampling the park’s rides.
Mad Science, a national
organization, offers science educational programs to schools and
individuals.

completes
Move from Longview to Kalama
ViaTech Publishing
Solutions has completed a move from its former offices in
Longview to the Port of Kalama Kalama River Industrial Park.
The company, a digital
printing service, produces just-in-time printed products for
such clients at Papa Murphy’s and Les Schwab.
There are 26 employees in
the Kalama operations. The company, headquartered in Bay Shore,
N. Y., has ten other locations throughout the country.
4th of July
celebration gets
$65,000 boost from Comcast
Clark Count cable
television supplier Comcast has presented the Vancouver National
Historic Reserve Trust with a $65,000 check to help support the
2004 4th of July at the Historic Reserve celebration.
In its 42nd year, the
annual celebration is climaxed by one of the largest fireworks
displays in the United States. The display and parts of the
celebration on the parade grounds of Vancouver Barracks will be
shown live on KGW-TV.
No mail delivery
Friday
Closure of federal
offices Friday, June 11, honoring past president Ronald Regan,
extends to the U.S. Mail service. There will be no mail delivery
service Friday. Major American stock exchanges will be closed in
Mr. Reagan’s memory. The Insider will not be published.

Jake Bredstrand,
Evergreen High School junior and president of the school’s
Future Farmers Association chapter, has been awarded a $5,000
scholarship by the Fort Motor Co. Bredstrand is also one of two
state delegates to the national FFA convention being held in
