I-205 near 134th Street will be closed in both directions at various night times next week

Construction of the NE 20th Avenue interchange with I-205 in Salmon Creek will cause night time closures in both directions at different times next week.

Short detours will be set up to provide for north- and south-bound traffic.

Tuesday, July 6, and Thursday, July 8, southbound I-205 traffic will be closed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Wednesday, July 7, and Friday, July 9, northbound I-205 traffic will be closed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The state Department of Transportation says last-minute changes in the weather could alter closure days.

Wine & Jazz Festival volunteers
to earn free admission, tee shirts

Volunteers for the Vancouver Wine & Jazz Festival, Friday, Aug. 27, through Sunday, Aug. 29, in Esther Short Park will earn a tee shirt and free admission to the festival on each day they volunteer, according to festival executive director Michael Kissinger.

Shifts are three-and-a-half to four hours long. Several jobs are available, including pouring beer, wine and water, working backstage and in the VIP hospitality chalet, and in a labor pool.

All volunteers are required to complete a one-hour training session, at which time they receive tee shirts and festival worker identification.

Nominations being sought for
Community Pride Design Awards

Nominations for 2004 Community Pride Design Awards are being sought by the Clark County Community Development Department.

The program, established in 1996 by public and private organizations, recognizes outstanding and innovative efforts in creating buildings, developments, civic improvements and environmentally sensitive design projects.

Nominations are due by Friday, Aug. 27, for projects completed in calendar 2003 or the first half of 2004. For further information, call Kathi Curtis, 397-2375, extension 4382.

Vancouver Business Journal preparing professional association directory

Listings of professional associations for a professional association directory being prepared by the Vancouver Business Journal is free, according to business journal associate editor Susie Bodman.

The directory will be part of a Guide to Professional Services, which is being published Friday, July 23.

Deadline for listing is Wednesday, July 14. For further information, call Bodman at 695-2442.

Nine local vocalists to perform, compete during 4th of July celebration at the reserve

Nine Clark County high school students have been selected to perform and compete during the Sunday, July 4, celebration at the Fort Vancouver Historic Reserve.

Competition for the grand prize, a consultation with Becky Stroebel of Sterling Talent, begins at 10 a.m.

The competition program is co-hosted by KGW-TV newsman Bruce Sussman and 11-year-old Kyra Smith, Vancouver. Washington Lt. Gov. Brad Owen is one of the judges.

The competing vocalists are Sara Gile, Joselyn Halleck, Lisa McGuire and Mallory Springer, all of Skyview High School; Amanda Goolsby, Washougal High School; Katie Kalua and Nick Young, both of Mt. View High School; Troleda Munkers, Heritage High School; and Catherine Kohn, a home schooler.

Karen Brown, Vancouver, has been appointed by Gov. Gary Locke to a three-year term on the state Higher Education Facilities Authority. Brown is a multicultural student affairs-retention manager at Clark College. The authority authorizes tax exempt bonds and loan proceeds for private, nonprofit institutions of higher education. nnn Incumbent Republican State Sen. Don Benton (D-17th) has been endorsed for reelection by the state Aerospace and Machinists Union, according to Benton’s campaign office. Benton has no primary opposition, but two Democrats, John T. Davis and Paul G. Waadevig, are running in the primary for his position.
