Local organizations collaborate to offer
free health screening
Two free back-to-school health fairs are being
offered in August for children preparing to return to school.
Activities during the 10 a.m.-to-3 p.m. health fairs include
enrollment in the state's free-to-low cost health coverage, free
children immunizations, dental, hearing and vision screenings,
bicycle helmets, sports shoe exchange and $20 sports physicals.
The health fairs are Saturday, Aug. 14, in the East County
Family Resource Center, 1702 C Street, Washougal, and Saturday,
Aug. 28, in the North County Family Resource Center, 701 E. Main
Street, Battle Ground.
Parents interested in enrolling children under the age of 18
in health insurance may call Healthy Kids, toll free, (877)
543-7669.
Part of a national Covering Kids campaign, the local effort
is a collaboration of the Children's Home Society, Clark County
Health Department, Covering Kids & Families, East County Family
Resource Center, Education Opportunity for Children & Families,
Lacamas Medical Group, McLoughlin Family Practice, North County
Family Resource Center, Value Dental Care, and the Washougal
Community Library.

Community Pride Design Award
nominations sought
Nominations for Community Pride
Design Awards are being sought by the Clark County Department of
Community Development. Nominations close Friday, Aug. 27. The
awards will be made in November.
The program was established in 1996 to recognize unique
efforts in creating buildings, developments and civic
improvements that have a positive impact on the community.
Past winners include the Kimball House restoration in
Vancouver, the Vancouver Housing Authority in-fill housing
program, the Jack, Will & Rob Youth Center, Camas, the
Amphitheater in Clark County, the Heritage Center, La Center,
the Firstenburg Family Fountain at Washington State University
Vancouver, and the Palace Theater, Vancouver.

New Vancouver Lake Watershed Partnership
accepting applications for citizen representation
Nine citizens are being sought to join the newly
formed Vancouver Lake Watershed Partnership, formed by the Port
of Vancouver, City of Vancouver Department of Public Works,
Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation, Clark County Department of
Public Works and the Fruit Valley Neighborhood Association.
The 2,600-acre shallow lake, largest in surface area in the
Vancouver-Portland metropolitan region, currently is closed to
most recreation, including swimming, because of an algael
infestation, the second in the past two years to close the lake.
Ownership of the lake and responsibility for its care have
not been entirely determined.
Applications for membership in the partnership must be
completed by Friday, Sept. 3. For further information, call

Sewer treatment plants get A+ from the state
Five southern Washington wastewater treatment plants
got A+ ratings from the state Department of Ecology and today
received Outstanding Wastewater Treatment Plant awards from DOE
officials in Vancouver.
Cited for perfect compliance with wastewater permits were the
Vancouver Marine Park Reclamation Facility, the Salmon Creek
Sewage Treatment Plant, the Vancouver Westside Treatment
Facility, the Washougal Sewage Treatment Plant and the Woodland
Sewage Treatment Plant. Only 35 of the 305 wastewater facilities
in the state received awards for perfect compliance.
Celebration of the life of Kelly Patterson
is Sunday in Gresham
A celebration of the life of N. Kelly Patterson,
who died July 18 at the age of 43, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in
the Bateman Carroll Funeral Chapel, 520 W Powell Boulevard,
Gresham. Mrs. Patterson died after a long battle with cancer.
Mrs. Bateman is survived by her husband, Bob Patterson,
Clark County waste reduction specialist, and three children,
Skye, Griffin and Keegan.
Memorial contributions may be made to Kelly's Kids at
any Bank of America branch in Washington.
