Settlement!
Negotiators
for Local 125 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and Clark
Public Utilities reached a tentative agreement on a new contract, at 4:30
a.m. this morning, just hours before a possible strike by union workers.
The agreement, which still must be ratified by union members
and approved by the utility's board of commissioners, covers about 100 of the
utility's 330 employees. The union represents linemen, meter technicians,
equipment operators, dispatchers, appliance repair technicians, and water system
employees.
The 30-month agreement provides wage increases of 7 percent
on September 1, 2004, 3.5 percent on March 1, 2005, and 5.25 percent effective
May 1, 2006. The first-year wage increase recognizes the lack of an increase in
2003. In addition, the utility will contribute a total of $235,000 to union
members' 401(k) accounts.
Negotiations between the utility and union representatives
have been taking place for more than a year, recently under the direction of a
federal mediator.
The previous contract expired February 28, 2003. Members of
the union have been working under terms of the contract. However, the union
terminated that agreement effective at midnight last night. This meant that union
members could have legally gone out on strike early today.
"I'm pleased we were able to reach an agreement that provides competitive pay
and benefits for our union employees while also balancing the needs of the
utility's customer-owners," said Wayne Nelson, the utility's CEO/general
manager. The rank and
file is expected to vote on the settlement this week and utility commissioners
are expected to approve the settlement next Tuesday.
