Jerald (Jerry) Olin, Clark County labor and civic leader, died Friday at the age of 93. Mr. Olin, who came to Vancouver in 1942, was a carpenter. He later became business agent and financial secretary of the Carpenters’ Union, Local 1715, a post he held for 25 years. Mr. Olin was also a member of the board of directors of the Vancouver Housing Authority for 24 years. He was a founder of and a volunteer for the Seafarers Center, a member of the Independent Order of Foresters, and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Before moving to Vancouver, Mr. Olin, who was born in Mandan, N.D. Nov. 2, 1910, was a school teacher in North Dakota for seven years.

Surviving Mr. Olin are his wife of 67 years, Inez; two daughters, Karen Dickenson, Vancouver, and Sandra Fujii, Honolulu; two sons, Dennis Olin, Bellevue, and Michael Olin, Bend; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, in Trinity Lutheran Church, 309 W. 39th Street. Memorial gifts may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Seafarers Center.

The featured speaker at the 3rd annual Mayors’ and Community Leaders’ Prayer Breakfast, at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, in the Red Lion Hotel at the Quay, is former National Football League quarterback and executive director of Families Northwest, Jeff Kemp. Kemp, in an 11-year career in the NFL, was quarterback for the Seahawks, Eagles, 49ers and Rams.

Also speaking at the breakfast is Clark County resident Rebecca Harder.

Promotional display space available
at Vancouver Community Library

Applications from individuals and groups involved in educational, cultural, intellectual and charitable activities who would like to promote those activities in the display case at the Vancouver Community Library are being accepted through Monday, Sept. 27, reports library spokesperson  Mary Buelow. Political promotions are prohibited, as is advertising for commercial purposes.

Buelow says an average 35,000 library patrons pass by the display case each month. Ten one-month promotions are being offered. According to Buelow, requests exceed space available; therefore, the library conducts a lottery to determine who will be able to use the free space.  For further information, call 699-8873.
